Reflux's Basic Fraps Pointers

fraps_win33.gif

Hopefully this will put an end to some of the Fraps confusion as of late.

Writing this up because there's been a bit of an explosion in the amount of people getting the dreaded Fraps lag.

So those people are saying 'hurr durr you need (super powerful system specs) to record fraps without lag', this is simply not the case. There are a few known causes of lag in fraps and I'll explain those, this won't be too long, this is just a post for those people who are new to Fraps and need basic knowledge of the app. I'll keep it as modular as possible and add tips as I think of them.

I'll add some FAQ questions at the end too.

Well, here's the pointers, they only deal with the framerate lag side of fraps because that is really the only problem with the application that people complain about.
Tip 1.

When you install fraps, make sure to install it to a separate drive.

Because of all the reading/writing the drive has to do when it's handling all that raw AVI data. This causes ingame jitter and framerate instability. If you only have one drive, as fraps is standalone you can just copy the folder onto a USB drive and that will work too.

The ideal scenario would be to have 3 drives, one for your program files, one for your games and one for your Fraps recordings. This 100% guarentees that there will be no conflicting or jittering.
Tip 2.

In the 'Movies' tab, untick 'Lock framerate'.

Lock framerate is not a lock, do not confuse it with a 'surefire button that guarentees your framerate will never go lower' it's not a power button for your computer. It is simply a framerate limiter that limits the ingame framerate to your recording framerate.

This button itself could be confused with 'lag' in Fraps, the button brings the ingame framerate down to whatever framerate is set under 'Video Capture Settings'. Though, this is not recommended for people with bad PC's and can result in frame loss or 'skipping' in the video, best used when scaled against how high your framerate is when you're recording and how much framerate you have when you are not recording.

Example: You get 100fps when playing normally and 80fps when you are recording. It is best set to 90fps. This will pretty much counter any issues with skipping.

If you don't feel confident in your rigs ability to keep up with recording at the framerate you have set, it's best to leave the lock framerate on and record at a higher framerate. Though this is more costly in file size, it 100% guarentees smooth video provided the framerate does not drop below what you have it locked at.

FAQ

Q. My file size is too large! I can't upload a 400GB file to Youtube! How can I make it smaller?

A. Yes, fraps records to RAW AVI, meaning it has not been compressed. If you don't have much hard drive space you can tick 'Half-size' in the 'Movies' tab. This will half the resolution in the video, drastically reducing file size. For example, 1280x720 will become 640x360.

As said, once recorded your files have to be compressed, if you are editing, edit with the RAW recorded files FIRST and always export/render as RAW AVI. The best application to compress with in my heavily experienced opinion is Easy H264. H264 is a lossless compression codec which does a really good job retaining detail in video, and making the files absoloutely tiny!

I won't ramble on about it but it's very simple to use, you can download it here.

Q. Can I record my voice while I'm playing?

A. Yes you can, if you have a microphone plugged in, select the 'Movies' tab and click 'Record External Input'.

Q. My video suddenly stops recording while I'm playing, what do I do?

A. Make sure you've bound your record key to a key you will NEVER press while ingame! I use Insert because I record FPS games and it is rarely used. You can set the Hotkey in the 'Movies' tab. If you are running the free version of Fraps then you can only record 60 second clips at a time.

Q. Can I record my desktop?

A. Yes, tick 'Monitor Aero desktop (DWM)' in the 'General' tab. This will allow you to record your desktop as you would any game.

Q. Are there any ways to improve Fraps video quality?

A. Well, Fraps provides the best video quality over any other recording device, the only thing I can think of is the 'Force lossless RGB capture' option in the Movies tab. But this isn't very useful as most likely 99.9% of the time you'll be compressing the file anyway.

For more FAQ stuff, you can read the official Fraps FAQ. Otherwise, I'll update this one with any questions that you have for me concerning Fraps, so long as I don't get lazy.

If there's anything you're confused about with fraps that isn't in this guide, post here. Otherwise, make a thread.

Absoloutely, this is more to do with issues unrelated to hardware, but having hardware capable of multitasking is definitely key.

Thanks for the FAQ! One question, Is there a free program with presets to convert to 1080p instead of 720p like the one you have linked to? Thank you!

Edit*

From Website "Q: Does it only support 720p?

Currently, the application will output the same resolution it gets in on HD presets. For example, Extreme+ HD will output a 1080p file if the source file is 1080p."

Unsure of quad support, throw an email to matt@tweevo.com like it says on the site I assume he can answer any further questions with the app.

Yeah if you throw 1080p at it it will spit it back out at 1080p smile.gif
