Need server build help

Thread Starter
A friend of mine is looking to build a new server. His capabilities needed are operating RHEL , Asterisk with minimum call processing , file and data storage, web hosting, email service, run all RAID capabilities. Would prefer to run RHEL on an ssd.

Looking for build advice. Max budget around $1000.

No, that's a thin client, not a server, it requires a server on the back end. Question, why SSD? Once system is up your read/writes would be to your raid array with your stored/protected data. The only thing the SSD would help with mostly is logging data, assuming you don't change the default locations, and start up. Honestly it's not worth it. I would just make a partition on the raid array for the OS.

Unless you absolutely need every single millisecond you can get from access times, a single SSD is not worth it for a server. The only way it's worth it is if you include NO mechanical drives at all, and that costs heaps of cash.
SOmething like this dell poweredge would do perfectly.

I guess he doesn't NEED a ssd, it was more of a want. The thinking was to run RHEL on a super fast drive while the other storage drives aren't as important.

He would rather build it himself than buy a pre-built even if the Dell offers everything he is looking for.

I have no idea where to start as I have never built a server before so I am unaware of what hardware to approach for this build.

If someone could put together a list of hardware that comes in under $1000 it would be pretty smurf.

Pretty much any DECENT gaming pc will be a DECENT server (minus the video card). Just max the memory, add a decent RAID card, add the storage and your off to the races. Maybe add a multi-nic card if needed. Shave the costs where ever possible. Do you need a DVD-ROM drive? Or can everything be ripped from source CD/DVD and installed across the network or VIA jump drive?

With a thousand dollar budeget I'm sure he is not looking at multiple CPU sockets.

Question. Is he looking for hardware RAID that can handle all levels, or is he going to use MD RAID?

If hardware, $1000 budget...30-40% of that will be on a decent RAID card alone. I highly recommend MD RAID unless he's planning an absolutely tremendous RAID 6 array.

Speaking of that - what are his storage requirements, and desired RAID level? How intensive of a web server?

Any 2500k build with a decent motherboard with fully populated memory banks will do very well in this sort of setup - pure server grade equipment is probably unnecessary - if not impossible with a $1000 budget. However, I'd recommend an AMD rig in this situation since you'd be able to run ECC RAM (you want this) without going to server-class processors and boards (which would be out of your price range).
