New SSD = Bad Battery Life - Page 2

If you're in the market for an SSD, Tom's Hardware has shown that the OCZ unit has unbeatable PPW figures. If you've been following the debate over solid-state device energy efficiency, you'll be interested to hear that the battle is finally over – with SSDs taking their rightful place at the top of the battery-friendly chart.

I thought I did :/

I replaced the SSD, then booted into a Flash drive with windows installation on it, and installed W7. I've already had windows do an update, and still nothing.

I mean, most things work. The function keys (although they don't display on the screen anymore), the HDMI port, the wireless... all the basics. But the webcam and battery seem to suffer.

My biggest question is why does the Acer website that gives support for this laptop offer 5+ different drivers for the same thing? For example:

See for yourself, it's an Acer Aspire 3820T.

because there are different models that come with different wifi adapters and cameras, lan, video and so on. You need to get the right one for your hardware.

Yes i agree with this.

I had to reinstall coz of the MSAHCI driver and partition. Also i had alot of driver crashes.

Clean install is best!

qft, there might be different models of your laptop with small letter suffix/prefix differences.

Laptop manufacturers change out components based on cost/performance/availability...etc you need to find your exact model. (in the experience i've had, a couple googles will get you to a forum post with the same issue.

The acer support forums are likely a good place to go if google fails you.

EDIT: did you try using the laptop without the power managment features installed?, they may be optimized for disk based drives and are malfunctioning because of the SSD

SDD does not automatically imply lower power usage. My SDDs certainly use less than my desktop drives, but not less than most of my 2.5" notebook drives.

Also, many of those drives listed are different versions, or may be for slightly different models/options. Not every laptop of the same model will have exactly the same components.

I have an Acer laptop, and I do not use drivers from the Acer site unless I cannot find them from the component manufacturer. You should be going to Intel/AMD for your graphics drivers, and either Intel, Broadcom, or Atheros for your wireless driver; only resorting to Acer if you cannot get the drivers from them.

^^ A ssd drive will always use less power than any drive that has to spin a disk and move a arm to read the disk no matter if it's a desktop drive or a laptop drive. They both have a motor that spins the disks and moves the arm. SSD's do not. So even a 2.5" laptop drive will use more power than a SSD bud.

Wrong.

Some SSDs use less power than some laptop drives, sometimes.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...tery,1955.html

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4253/t...-ssd-review/11

In my personal experience all of my 5400rpm single platter 2.5" drives use less power than any of my SSDs.

It often takes less electricity to spin a single tiny platter and move a pair of tiny heads on a tiny armature with a tiny solenoid than it does to operate a decent quantity of fast NAND flash.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be sure to search for my drivers differently now. But as I said, I thought I did do a clean install. Perhaps I should try again? What should I do differently this time?

And last, I can't just pop in the original HD can I? I'd have to reinstall W7 anyway right?

I was pretty sure you did from what you discribed. Boot from the Disk or Usb drive as you did, once it loads the files and starts he install setup. Choose custom install. When you come to the point where it shows you what drives are avalible, click on the drive you want to use, the click drive options down below and hit delete until there is only one drive shown above(as long as only 1 drive is in the system). Once you clicked delete/format, then click "new" down below and hit create or apply(not sure what it was). That should make a small like 100mb partition for windows files and then your good to go. Continue with the rest of the install proccess. Once windows is installed, I always install the chipset driver first, just my way of installing. Then install Lan, Video, Audio, Touchpad, Webcam, Usb, Intel Engine management, and whatever utilities you need. Once those are installed, then right click on computer, hit properties, then device manager and see what still has a yellow ! next to it and that's all you need to install drivers for. Usually if you install the ones I just stated, you won't find any yellow ! flags anywhere. Oh yeah, Card reader driver too if you have one.

If this is what you did, then you did do a clean install. Let me know if I missed something or you have any ?'s
