12GB (3x4gb) in dual channel?

Thread Starter
Im building a new rig and I was planning on getting 8GB of corsair vengeance but with the prices as they are Im thinking what the heck might as well throw another $20 and make it 12GB (3x4gb) just to be future proof. What what Id really like to know is about dual channel. I have no clue what it is or what it means. The motherboard I got says it supports dual channel but then it doesn't say anything else. What would that mean if I got another stick of 4GB?

You don't HAVE to get another set.

Dual-channel → pairs of two

Given that 12GB kit is triple-channel, you will only be able to use two of them in order to get dual-channel to work correctly on your board.

You could always buy another set and have 24GB but you would be left over with 2 extra modules since your board only has 4 DIMM slots.

Only 4GBx4modules would work in 4DIMM slot board, for dual channel that is.

Dual channel basicly means there is two channels for the ram to run on at the same time. To have dual channel active you need at least one stick in each channel (in this case 2 sticks). That leaves you with two slots left over, these slots allow you to piggy back more ram into each channel. So you can have 3 sticks and still use dual channel.

Thank you! It makes sense now.
