DDR2 667 holding back CPU overclock - Page 2

I doubt your CPU is bottlenecking the 6950. I use a 6950 and my Phenom II x4 940 is pretty much equal to performance to your Q9300. Despite what my sig rig says, I don't OC my CPU anymore (too lazy to update).

If you're not noticing increases in FPS, do the obvious:
1. Make sure Vsync is disabled.
2. Make sure the AMD drivers are up to date. Try to cleanly re-install them again.

Your RAM might be slowing you down a little bit, but not by much. I ran some gaming tests with my DDR2 ram about a year ago comparing 800 mhz to 1066 mhz. I had 2 extra average FPS in Metro 2033. That's about it. I don't think the gap between 667 mhz and 800 mhz is that large.

Also I notice you have a 19" monitor. A 6950 with 2 gigs of VRAM is overkill for that small resolution.

Yeah Vsync is off on most of the stuff I play. Got the newest AMD drivers. I suppose I could try a clean install of the drivers but I don't really expect that to have much difference.

I'm planning on getting eyefinity in the future which is why I got this card.

I'm pretty certain there is a bottleneck somewhere, because you don't go from a GTX 260 to a 6950 and have zero performance gain in games. The important difference being that when I run a stress test on the video card I get more than double the performance than the previous card. Also, in gaming when I max out the AA + Antiscopic filter after trying it on low, I suffer no loss in frame rate. I'm no expert but that tells me the video card isn't working that hard due to a bottleneck most likely on the cpu/ram/mobo.

I might just go ahead and try the memory at 400mhz but change the "DRAM performance enhance" to Standard if that will make it work less.

Why don't you try a BSEL mod on your Q9300 then run your RAM at 667Mhz?

What games are you testing to measure the performance?

Team Fortress 2 (32 player spam fest). Frame rates are very similar to before except now I can ramp up the AA and Filtering without loss of frame rate.

iRacing (a lap around a particular track). Frame rates are the same as my old card.

I'm gonna reboot and set the cpu to 3.0ghz changing the ram timings to 6-6-6-18 and see how it acts

I don't know about iRacing, but TF2 is a very CPU dependent game. I still get weird performance from time to time depending on the map, and it's the only game I own where I can't alt tab back in, but maybe it's just me.

You should try testing out more GPU intensive games.

Well that's odd. Overclocked cpu to 3.0ghz and the frame rate didn't change by anything more than a few fps.

I ran GPU-Z and it said the GPU load was no higher than 30% when running games. I figured the CPU was bottlenecking but I'd expect to see more of a difference in performance from both the CPU and GPU after the overclock if that were true...

Is 3Ghz as far as you can go? Can you try 3.2-3.4Ghz to see if GPU usage increases any?

If the GPU load is that low you're definately being bottlenecked by CPU or RAM, why not just go pick-up a 2x2gig ddr2 setup they're cheeeeeap now days. (2 gigs of slow ram could be a sizable bottleneck especially if it's only a single 2 gig stick.

@PvTHudson a PhII @ 3.6 is farrrr faster than a Q9300
