Four total sticks is usually Dual-Channel. A whole channel consists of two stick slots.

Triple channel has six total slots, and so on.

Which mobo you have?

There is no quad channel right now. There will be for the X79 chipset, however.

So using four sticks is still just dual channel on your chipset.

yea but if i buy these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231456 they will work good with my dual channel board, and be ready for x79, instead of buying dual, and not taking advantage of the quad ram boards for x79 right??

Number of memory channels is not a property of the RAM itself, it's a property of the CPU (or chipset on older systems).

Memory that comes together as kits are just single DIMMs packaged together; there is nothing special about the memory itself.

Strictly speaking the X79 chipset doesn't have any memory channels.

The LGA-2011 platform will support four memory channels, but the memory is not connected to the chipset, and the X79 is not going to be the only LGA-2011 PCH.

It doesn't matter how many sticks come together. As long as you have four (or more) DIMMs, preferably of the same type, you can use quad channel on an LGA-2011 setup.

You also do not need to fill all memory channels from the get go.

Supposing your motherboard uses 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) RAM modules then, yes.

Maybe it won't be next gen compatible, though.

There's no difference between the actual memory. Any set of four matching DDR3 sticks should work in quad-channel when an IMC that uses it comes out.
