What RAM setup is the best for overclocking?

Thread Starter
I've heard before that having all memory slots filled won't allow for as high of an overclock, but that having 4GB sticks will have looser timings.

When I get my next build (BD if it's good, or SB if BD is bad), I'm more than likely going to get 8GB of RAM.
I also know that I'm going to overclock as both BD and SB (look to) overclock very nicely.

Should I go for a 4×2GB setup? Why?
Or
Should I go for a 2×4GB setup? Why?

It would be totally awesome for y'all to list all of the advantages and disadvantages.
Personal preference works, as well.

Thanks.

It is as you already heard generally lol, "having all memory slots filled won't allow for as high of an overclock, but that having 4GB sticks will have looser timings"

I would prefer 2x4gb sticks rather than 4x2gb sticks myself because I do photo and video editing, thus I can always go ahead and get some more when prices drop more.

So
first both sandy bridge and bulldozer are and will be great chips..
so that part out of the way haha
Thing about AMD is that the systems like Tight Timings Lower latency is key for amd
Ive only seen rumors that The new BD chip will enjoy the loose timings and higher Frequencies that Intel enjoys so much

Filling all ram slots just puts some strain on the board and chip...but BD will easily handle this specially any new am3+ boards that will come out

Having 2x4GB is better for overclocking leaves headroom..
You just down clock the Frequency of the ram so you can tighten the ram...say you get some Gskill 1600 at cl 9 or 8 you can drop it to 1333 and get cl6 or cl7 with ease....

its strain on the chips and controller that you will notice with all the dimms filled...

Remember AMD likes lower latency and tight timings
Intel enjoys high frequency and loose and tight timings

Just different controllers but on both Having more sticks just adds more stress and slows down looking through the memory for data

Ill have to look for a good article explaining it

odd to bump it though..

If you have 4 sticks of ram there is more strane on the memory controller. If you are trying to overclock, this means it is harder to high higher and also means more voltage on the IMC in order to overclock the memory when you overclock the CPU.

2x4GB means less stress but more ram to address, though the NB doesn't have an issue with this as the bandwidth all remains the same.

Just because you have a enw system doesn't mean that it can handle the extra memory on a high overclock. Why do you think overclockers only use 2 or 3 sticks (dual or tri channel)?

Thank y'all. I was fairly certain I was gonna go with the 2×4GB setup, but if that's what y'all are saying then I'm certain it's what I will do.
