in response to OP, in a x86 32-bit OS you are limited to what windows will recognize. I.e. if you have 6gigs of ram installed, only 3.75 +/- will be visible and accessible in your 32bit environment. You can however use your 32bit key and install a x64 vista as long as the install is exactly the same as original x32 vista installed. In other words, if your copy of vista in it's default state did not have sp1 or 2 on it, or was Home premium, professional, or ultimate.... you would need to install the respective OS in a x64 platform to use your original key. Hope that made sense.

yes, that is a good use for the +3.5G memory... I think the best thing would be to put the swapfile there... it will be almost as good as being able to see 6G

One more thing, from what I read it looks like that extra memory will still be unusable even with RAM DISK, which btw is not free either. If you want to get technical running a 32 bit OS means you have only 32 bytes to describe addresses so no matter what your computer will only be able to see up to that amount of memory (2^32 bytes). If you put on RAM disk it wont be able to view the extra GB's of memory because they are in a memory location that cant be reached with a 32 byte pointer.

That is no excuse. Students get amazing discounts on stuff, and if you are a tech student there is a good chance that you can get a copy of windows 7 free from MSDN.

I get free copies of windows from my school through microsoft.

Check the software section of your school. Windows 7 could be free.
