New Memory, 6x2 GB vs 3x4 GB

Thread Starter
I got atm 3x 2GB Corsair dominator 1600 cl8, but they seem to be dieing (only 4 gb ram in sys info, random app crashes saying memory could not be allocated, etc)

I'm wondering do I should buy 6x 2GB Kingston Hyperx 1600 cl9 or 3x 4GB Kingston Hyperx 1600 cl9? (6x is 85 euro, 3x is 75 euro).

Was thinkin about 6x in case some of them die then I still have a few left tongue.gif, but 3 dimms seem to have higher OC potentially =/

Ofc my dominators still got warranty, but ill send em in while i got new ram then, i don't wanna be without my pc again for a few weeks (just had to RMA my mobo cus it had died, i buy most parts 2nd hand so parts die on me faster =/)

(Is there a big diff in cl8/cl9 performance wise btw?)

I would go for the 3x4gb kit mainly because running 6 sticks and overclocking your cpu will require you to increase cpu vtt (imc voltage) a fair bit and it will put more stress on your imc.

Also if your wanting more performance out of your ram maybe look at a 3x4gb kit that does 2000mhz cl8

GO for the 3 x 4 GB. If the timings are the same, there really shouldn't be much difference in performance. However, with only 3 sticks, you'd be able to overclock it since the IMC isn't working as hard.
Contrary to popular belief, improved timings on intel's net as much performance increase as they do on AMD's.

See if you can get them to run at CAS 8, or even drop the frequency some more and see if they'll go any lower.
