1 stick of 4GB Vengeance Blue was bought

Thread Starter
instead of 2 x 2 GB. I wasn't aware of how it worked and that you needed two sticks of each and now I'm waiting for another 4GB.
When i get the other 4GB they will be ok if i ordered the same serial number of ram and can i just use 1 stick until it comes in the post.
This is the ram i bought first and i also bought the exact same one when i realised my error http://www.shop.bt.com/products/cors...-cl9-7DNS.html.
Sorry if its a daft question. I'm just learning about computers.

It's not necessary to have two sticks of RAM for everything to work properly, if I understand what you meant.
Yeah your computer will still work just fine, it'll just run in single channel mode until you get the second stick. Not like you'd see a significant difference in dual channel mode anyhow unless you benchmark something.

You can run a system with a single stick of ram just fine.

Motherboards have more than 1 slot for memory. Keep both and run 8 gigs in dual channel mode

Check your manual for which slots to use for the memory: usually it is 1 & 3, or 2 & 4.

It'll work fine. Single channel memory (only one stick) is slightly slower than dual channel (two-four sticks) but you probably wouldn't notice it. There are other things way slower than RAM (like an HDD).

You don't need 2 sticks of Ram for it to function fine.

There are many variables when it comes to RAM and that is why they provide different types and sizes.

If your motherboard can only support 2gb sticks and you want 4gb, then you would have to get 2 x 2gb (of course).
If it supports 4gb sticks, then you would only need 1 stick of 4gb.

I would stray from advice (in the future) from whomever told you that you needed 2 sticks to be operational. lol

Ah thanks guys thats cleared that up. I'll know now that 1 stick of ram can't be dual channel. I thought even if you ordered 1 stick it was classed as dual channel etc etc.
Anyway you learn by your mistakes Thanks.
