What codecs does the PS3 support?

Thread Starter
I was thinking about copying some videos to a 8gb USB stick and use the PS3 to watch them on my TV.

If I use a program like Any Video Converter, can I just convert it all to .avi with mpeg2/mp3 and will it work? Or should I use other codecs/containers?

doesn't do mkv's.

need avi, wmv (go in to settings to enable iirc) or mpeg

Here are the types of video files that the ps3 can play:
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html

It will work with either file type.

I recommend you use ps3 media server if you have a decent computer to stream video files. This will allow you to stream awesome mkvs! You can find out more information here: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/

I just started using it a few weeks ago... and it has brought new life to my ps3!!!

bit off topic but any ps3 with firmware above 3.66 cant play movies off the hdd unless you embed a muted or really low volume track to the movie
