Brought a Dead Stick Back To Life!

Thread Starter
I've had a dead 2GB OCZ DDR2 stick for quite some time now, and am waiting for OCZ to process my RMA request.

Mind you, this stick would not allow ANY of my computers to post. Anytime it was installed my motherboard would just go crazy beeping. Regardless of the voltage, timings, frequency, ect..

Not having anything better to do with it until my RMA is approved I decided to try the freezer trick. So I wrapped it with saran wrap, and stuck it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

VOILA!!

Boot up on the first try. I'm not convinced it's 100%, as I couldn't get it to run at it's default 800MHz (timings and voltage were on Auto), but the fact it actually boot up was amazing. Only about 2 hours in the freezer and it's visibly better. I'll try leaving it in the freezer again overnight to see if it does any better in the morning.

I'll still be RMA'ing it though.

Has anyone else been able to confirm the freezer fix?

i've heard of dead hypers comming back to life after a prolonged stay in a drawer, but i've actually never heard of a freezing trick.

I'm not sure what getting it cold would even do besides maybe form some ice on it

Freezing it would cause everything to contract. I dont see how that would help...the oven method would heat everything possibly melting broken connections which seems viable. But hey im no physicist.

the oven trick repaired my old 8800GT that was artifacting like crazy!

i used it as a physx card for a while after that (more than a year) and never had any other problem with it XD

So I guess no true PC Enthusiast should be without an oven and a freezer.

Actually... Freezing RAM does bring some of them back to life. Seen it happen on tons of DDR2. Mostly with the D9s from back in the day.
