Will a single gtx 580 be sufficient for battlefield 3 and Skyrim?

Thread Starter
Note: my sig rig is not what I will be playing on, im building a 2500k rig in 2 weeks.

Well do you think a single gtx 580 will run battlefield 3 on ultra @ 1080p... I know it will run any other game I want to play at 60 fps.

What about overclocking, once I overclock it, what performance boosts can I expect (as well as how much of an overclock should i be able to get)

Should I take this over SLI, if so what should I get?

Yeah, it'll be fine.

Sure will, I've been doing it

BRB going to the future and then back so I can tell you.

FYI, no one outside of certain developers will know the answer.

This is what I suggest, go for a better bang/$ card, then sell it and buy a better card when there's a need. It's better to average 80% of max performance with lesser variability than it is to average 60-70% with more.

if money is an issue and this is a budget build, two 6870s will outperform a single 580 at a fraction of the cost. and to note, the vram is a neglagable issue.

Metro(the title holder for Vram hogs) 1920x1080 with everything on high DX11

6850xfire@40 FPS, lowest price @ newegg $130 AR each
6870xfire@44 FPS, lowest price @ newegg $150 AR each
580@33 FPS, lowest price @ newegg $415 AR each

6850s/70s can be found all over the place used for petty cash, and will still perform like champs. my suggestion snatch up a few of these and trump the 580s FPS for less money. when they start to show the end of their usefulness clock the crap out of them and start looking for a similar upgrade. 580s are going down in price, i saw the lightning xtreme drop from $600 to $580. in a 4-5 months, who knows, you might be able to get them for the price of a 6970 or 6950 now. why spend an extra $200 on a card that isnt necesary yet.

Resolution? 1920x1080 will be fine. Higher will require more VRAM - two 3GB 580's should be enough.

No, a $500 graphics card won't be sufficient for a $60 game, you kidding me?

J/k of course, why wouldn't it?

This.

You don't even need a GTX580 to max out BF3 on Ultra @ 1080p and get decent fps.

dont get me wrong on this, i love my 580s, and i definately wouldnt trade them for any other card.

but i came in with almost unlimited budget for my build. ive got over $1200 invested in my cards, not including the water blocks. but im running 5760x1080 on max. if i was running one screen, you could duplicate my build and put it next to the same thing with the 6870s and it would be just as playable.

except the 6870s would probably be easier to overclock than my evga 580 3gbs.

oh and FYI at this point in the GTX 500 series life span, if your buying a reference card theres a good posablity of getting a dud. EVGA handpicks their cards for the Classified versions, same for MSI and their lightnings. and EVGAs superclocked with its 10-20mhz overclock usually means that card wouldnt go much further so it was deemed a superclocked card that was limited by the maufacturers factory OC.

even when you go to get a high end card, if you dont get a high end version of it, you mite be getting screwed.

Unless drivers/optimization changes drastically in the next few weeks, a single 580 is not going to give you 60 fps in battlefield 3 consistently. Indoors yes, but not outdoors. My overclocked 570 gtx drops to around 35 fps in some sections of caspian border, and a 580 is not that much more powerful. Plus, DICE claims that not all the ultra graphics settings have been unlocked in the beta.
