Complete n00b to BFBC2/BF3 - A few questions

So as the titles states, I am no BFBC2 expert. I have only played for a few minutes trying things out.

Questions:

BFBC2:
1. Run and strafe? I am SO used to running and strafing that I cannot function without it. Apparently, it will not let me do this. Am I missing some setting or is this really not allowed?
2. Cycling through weapons - I have my two mouse thumb buttons to go next weapon, previous weapon. However, I can only cycle between 1 and 2. They never seem to select 3 (my gadget). Any way to fix this?

BF3
1. Is there really no "main menu?" - When I "launch" the game and I go to battlelog or whatever, I can't get to a main, functioning menu in-game. When I launch the game, it automatically starts me playing. The ONLY way for me to adjust graphics, controls, etc, is to hit escape while in-game. If I die, then I lose all the settings I just created if I don't save first.
2. No thumb-button support? - Can't seem to get mine working.

I know I know this is a beta, but I was just wondering if everyone was having the same issues. It's hard for me to functionally play if I can't bind my keys properly

I'm just so confused o_O

BF3 doesn't have a proper menu on the PC. Sucks, but what can we do at this point?

I am so sick of people not being able to "figure out" BF. Cycle weapons through mouse scroll. You can side step but you lose accuracy and leave yourself open. As far as the BF3 beta is concerned, just stop playing it, and wait 3 weeks. There is no button mapping and we all have the same gripes in regards to.. well everything. STOP TREATING THIS SERIES LIKE COD OR ANY OTHER GENERIC FPS..
Put in 50 hours and report back. It really is that simple. BC2 was my introduction to the BF series and I raged quit at level 20. 8 months later, I re-visited it and things starting clicking and I got better. Currently lvl 42 and if is wasn't for BF3 I would hit 50 in the next few months.

No need to go off on me like that. Everyone has a different playing style, so I apologize if mine is not "normal." I can't cycle weapons using mouse scroll because that is how I reload (I have found it is easier for me to scroll down to reload than to find the "R" button and press it). This is how I have played for years. BF doesn't differentiate between a down-scroll and an up-scroll like other games do, so I am stuck with using both my mouse buttons to switch weapons (and I still can't select my "gadget"). And as stated, I am used to run/strafe, which I could not do, so I was simply asking if there was a way to do it.

As for the beta, I wasn't sure if it was my computer that wasn't mapping or in general, which is why I asked.

Also, I have never put 50 hours into any game. I have two jobs and a family. The most I have ever put into a game was Counter-Strike, which I have logged a total of 31 hours over the past 6 years. So I apologize if I'm trying to ask for help up front instead of wasting time that I don't have trying to figure out something that I know somebody else already knows.

change the way you play... it's as simple as that...

adapt... those who adapt always come out on top...
when you've played the "new way" for a few hours, you'll get used to it and would become automatic muscle memory...
