Why do people like WoW?

For whatever reason I have largely missed the world of warcraft craze that has pretty much dominated MMOs for like the last 5 years. Recently I gave it a try, I gave it two tries actually, to see if I was missing anything. Here is the experience I had.

I downloaded the started edition on my battlenet account. This allows you to play up to level 20 for free with no time trial. Perfect. 10gb of download later, I am going through the character selection screen. I make a rather gruesome looking undead mage and set out to become the best undead mage in all of the world of warcraft.

Now I expected that the game would immediately draw me in. I expected something exciting, intriguing or at the very least... mildly interesting. Instead I get a little blurb about the undead and sylvanys and then I get up from some grave. I get familare with the controls.. move left and right and shoot fireballs by clicking on the icons... that's about it. I seek quests and orders from various ghouls and skeletons and endeavor on the path of "questing".

Combat consists of casting the same spells over and over again, which all take a certain amount of charge time and become interrupted if your character moves at all. So strategy is confined to casting spells really far away so you get in a bunch of free shots while the NPCs chase dummily after you. Kiting, dodging, or fleeing is pretty much impossible since even the slightest movement starts the whole spell casting process over again. Each spell costs a certain amount of mana, but it might as well be free for all intensive purposes. 6 mana to cast a spell from a pool of 250, that recharges at a rate of like 50 per second inbetween battles might as well be a million. You get a staff, or, in the case of the undead, various small blades. But the damage output is remarkably pitiful so there is really no point in bothering.

The battles would take place either one of two ways... I would approach them so that they were just in range of my fireball spell, and than spam click it until the bad guys went away. Or I would be overwhelmed because the character happened to walk past me or something instead of standing still and the spell missed instead of doing damage. Whereby I would become a ghost, which means I can walk really fast but not fly or go through walls, and then once I found my body I could be revived with a portion of my health. I would then attempt to run away before being killed again and having to start the whole process over. Three or four times of this is the norm if you are unfortunate to die in a well creaped area.

Although the combat is boring, the game makes up for it by having yet more boring quests. In one quest I would get the privilege of killing 10 of one type of monster, to then get a chance at a quest to kill these exact same monsters. Also got to collect various flora and engage in linear dialogue where there game gave you all of one choice of responses. Yippy.

There were various other crafting bits that weren't yet explained, and I saw someone ride around on a skeleton horse, but other than this the spells, abilities, equipment, ect are all things that I had seen in every RPG ever.

Granted I didn't play for very long, but so far I am incrediably uninspired and rather underwhelemed. Why in the world would someone play this for 40+ hours a week? I had heard some people talk about pro WoW gamers... and I figured that in raids or PVP or whichever there must exist some degree of skill and finesse. Then I played the game and now I am struggling to understand how that is even remotely possible. I watched a WoW stream during a raid for a few minutes... I saw the exact same mindless spam clicking of spells and abilities that I used in my own game.

I guess I am struggling to understand how this ever became such a momonumental success. I epected to find something in WoW that was fun, unique, and orignal, but instead I found the exact same things I had seen in guild wars, runescape, and any other MMO that had come before it. In every respect it was absolutely in no way better or worse. Is there more to this game that I don't know about... I am genuinely curious. Why in the world do people like this game?

Friends. If I didn't have friends to constantly go back to it with, I wouldn't play it.

That's it.

First of all I can tell you that WoW now is less exciting than it has ever been, at least if you've been into the scene for a while.

If you aren't able to connect to people easily, WoW isn't the game for you, and you'll run around like a loner, not having anything to do but minding your own business.

Personally, I've always been a PvP player, and been rather successful at that. The community over time grew really big (during TBC) and kind of died once cataclysm was released.

Arena-junkies being the most popular site for pvpers around the world was pretty much just poisoned by all the scumbags getting the minimum required achievements for a "junkie" status there (2400 rating/Gladiator).
It turned from being a good community to a random mainstream internet forum where people spread trashtalk, including memes and other things.

And this is exactly why I've decided to stop once this season is over.

What do you do with you friends? Why is it all the sudden kick ass if you have few buddies playing the same silly game with you

To me, WoW is the worst game ever. I can never understand and never will how anyone can like it.

Why do some people like Left 4 Dead? It's completely subjective. I don't play WoW because it doesn't suit my taste. But to each his own.

The same way L4D2 magically becomes less boring with buddies. Sure, the game still sucks, but it's less sucky...

But unlike L4D2, you're totally neglicting the social aspects of WoW. Just like any other MMO, it draws its strength from being a social game...

Games are more fun when you socialize...if I don't play with friends the games are usually boring to me...except Forza...

And I agree with not liking WOW...I couldn't find it fun at all.
