New Graphics Card Advice (Current GTX 480) - Page 2

Getting a 580 seems like a waste because it is not much faster than a 480. Either SLI the 480, or trade for a 570 and SLI those.

My 570 SLI chew through any game I throw at them a max settings. I am running the BF3 beta at ultra settings at over 100fps.

Get another GTX 480 and go sli.

You psu will be ok with a stock to 800 core clock on your 480s, more than enough for BF3 imo.

Two 480s even @750 core can play Crysis @ max settings like butter.

Sli the 480s. It's incredible bang for your buck right now. I'm seeing between 75-90fps (70 min) @1920x1200 with everything maxxed with tri sli 480s. That's with no overclock on the gpus or cpu. With cpu overclock I get closer to 90 average and with gpu core overclock at 800 just around 100 average.Pick up a second one and you should easily be able to have ~60fps with everything maxxed out. The 4x bandwidth might hurt you a little, but not by more than 10% of your possible maximum fps when using a full 16x slot.

570 is a downgrade from a 480. Less memory as well as memory bandwidth.
it is a slight downgrade performance wise, though the 570 is much quiter, and uses alot less power, therefore being able to SLI 570 without having to change the PSU, therefore saving OP money.

SLI GTX480 uses a lot of power would need a new PSU.

Thank you guys so much for all of the advice. I really appreciate all of the input very much.

As of right now, I think I will either get a 2nd GTX 480 (use my current PSU and just not OC them).

Or I will trade for the 570 from my friend and SLI those down the road.

Im very tempted to get the 2nd GTX 480, my biggest concern was heat, but now that im getting alot of positive feedback for that idea, I think I will likely lean towards buying a 2nd one from someone selling a card on OCN or buying it on ebay, then just throwing in and letting my games get devoured =]

Also.

Off topic as well, but because it was mentioned that the motherboard I have will only run 4x bandwith, if I have the money, is it worth the upgrade to go DOWN to a P67 from this Z68, but allow a good SLI setup? I was thinking along the lines of the ASUS Sabertooth P67, or the ASUS Maximus Gene 3 (this would come at christmas time =p)

Well, the fps that you have is IMO pretty decent so I would not consider buying new or anything. But if I were to do an upgrade I would either go SLI or wait for the new generation of Nvidia cards (600 series or whatever)

The chart below shows the average framerate % decrease for a GTX480 going from x16 to x8 to x4 for the 5 games tested. See if you can accept the performance loss due to the x4 limitation.
(Check out the link to see the result of each game individually.)
Link: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...x4,2696-9.html

For the 2 motherboards (Asus Sabertooth P67 and Maximus Gene 3), I would suggest the Sabertooth P67 because it allows one empty slot in between the two PCIEx16 slots while the Maximus Gene 3 does not.
This empty slot for easier for ventilation and is crucial for pairing up GTX480s (unless you plan to watercool, of course), IMHO.

Whether or not it is worthy to switch the motherboard to get rid of the x4, I would do it personally.

Thank you windfire, I very much so appreciate it.

Looks like ill be upgrading to the P67 Sabertooth and getting a 2nd GTX 480.

I will go for the GTX 480 first then get the motherboard, since the 4x isnt as much, but will still give me a huge gain in performance.

Hopefully (since im not doing ANY overclocking), my PSU will be good enough for both cards.

If anyone knows where I can get a good deal on either that would be awesome!!

Wait for 600 series, its only 3 months out. I would'nt spend big $$$ on gpu's right now. GTX 480 is still amazing performance.
