Unable to get GUI login

Thread Starter
A bit ago I was having issues setting TwinView. After some time, I decided to strip out the Nvidia driver and start fresh.

This time, however, adding an entry in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist for nouveau was not actually suppressing nouveau from starting at boot.

So I added "nouveau.blacklist=1" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT within /etc/default/grub. This seemed to do the trick. I booted straight into a text login, launched the installer and it finished with no errors. After running "startx" I was able to set TwinView immediately without any problems, yay!

Now the bad part. First, even after removing "nouveau.blacklist=1" I get a text base login - I can't get the GUI login back. Secondly (maybe this is a cause of X not starting immediately, I'm not sure) when I do get the GUI up, panels are gone. I have to manually call gnome-panel.

What do, OCN, what do?

well if you decide to blacklist nouveau you of course need the nvidia proprietary driver

echo options nouveau modeset=0 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf

sudo update-initramfs -u

adding it to grub like that, will only last as long until the next kernel update or if you ever run update-grub from the cli. this will block the nouveau driver from being added into the initramfs, even after kernel updates (as to the reason why /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist for nouveau, doesn't work, it might if you done had updated the initramfs.)

the only time ubuntu will not load to a gui, is if the driver has failed to load for some reason, i would try what i posted, and maybe reinstalling the nvidia driver (was there a kernel update in the last few days or so? i haven't been in ubuntu for awhile, so i don't know.) manually installing the proprietary driver will force you to reinstall after each kernel update, it is why it is often suggested to go with the driver in the repository (they aren't that far out of date tbh.)
