Difference Between Turbo Multi and base Multi

Is there one? I am trying to go higher than 4.6 for 24/7 and have done a lot of experimentation.

is there a difference between setting all cores with turbo enabled to 48

vs

setting the base multi to 48?

I don't notice anything, but that does not mean that it is not different. Anyone that can shed some light on what the differences might be, I would appreciate it.

Yup there is !

Turbo mode is quite a complex feature. For example: our default clock speed is 3700MHz on a 2500K with Turbo, or 3300MHz without, so if we increase the Turbo ratio, we increase our maximum clock speed too - It's easy to work out, whatever figure you enter for the Turbo ratio, simply multiply that by the base clock value (which will be 100MHz i guess) and that will give you your x.xx clock speed in Ghz.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is my understanding of the turbo multi

edit: the thing with turbo is that it jumps in when you need it. While your CPU might be idling at let's say.. 1.6Ghz (mine does) your CPU will jump to 4Ghz if it needs to without any stuttering! Lots of people like it that way . You'll have to be adjusting voltages for a 24/7 4.6Ghz OC though, a domain I still have to learn about with sandy bridges... I've got mine since 2 weeks ago have a look at post #6 reading that dude's explanation might help you a lot actually

Thank you for the response, however that is not exactly what I was asking. I am aware of "how" turbo works, I am merely asking is there a difference between setting the base multiplier to lets say "48x" so 4.8ghz. (which still clocks down to 1.6ghz at idle) as C1E is enabled.. and lets say leaving the base multiplier at stock "33x" but setting turbo on all 4 cores "48x" I know that essentially what we have here is 2 different 4.8ghz clocks, however, is there a reason to do it one way and not the other? Or are they actually the same exact thing, does base multiplier just over ride turbo? Should I use one method over the other... or is it 6 in one half-a-dozen in the other?

Hmmm... I do know that it's best to OC with your multi, though I honestly can't remember the reason why maybe just because you could get a higher multi on turbo? higher turbo multi = giher performance than normal multi... Good remark there I believe I can only adjust my turbo multi though, let me have a check on this one
