Yeah but you get only a handful of local channels in HD over the air...Good luck getting movie channels, espn, etc...
That is still far better then the $70 or so a month that I see most cable companies charge...I recently switch to a Satilite company so I am still in my introductory period, but I think my channel "tier" will be about $70 a month in about two years. I'd love to pay $30 and then only get like ten channels.

My guess is you'll have the base price of $10-$15 which is what most companies charge for just the local over-the-air channels and then $1-2 per channel after that for standard digital cable channels. Premium channels like HBO and Shotime will retain their current price structure.

Exactly. If channels have to start competing more for programming, we'll hopefully start to see a lot of the crap start disappearing and there might actually be something worth watching on TV for once.

This would be fantastic if true. I only watch like 4 channels anyway, well 3 now since History channel turned into a reality show network.

This has been talked about for almost a decade now. The FCC and Congress even thought about mandating it.

I've got DishNetwork satellite, and I pay (taxes and all) about $65 for 250+ channels, HD, and all the music channels.

I watch maybe 20 of those channels regularly (once a week)...tops.

It will be sad if they charge $2-3 per channel for individual channels...since right now I guess I'm paying about $.40 per channel.

The thing a lot of people won't like is that a LOT of channels will go out of business. If cable providers go a la carte, that means they will shift to per-channel profit agreements with the programming providers. When channels like American Health Network or Reelz Channel or TV Guide Channel only have 250k subscribers, they'll go belly-up real quick.

I can see groups like NBC Universal fighting this. Selling packages is how they fund less popular programming until it takes off to make them more profit. Disney is pro-package, since they can package ABC, ESPN, and Disney channels all into one thing.

To be honest, I'd pay $1 per channel a la carte. Or, get like bulk pricing for 25, 50, 100, 200, etc., channel bundles.

I can even name off the channels I'd keep:

Discovery Channel, Science Channel, History Channel, History International, Fox Sports News, Fox Sports Southwest, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, Syfy, AMC, CNN, VH-1 Classic, 8 Encore movie channels, Fox Soccer Channel, Comedy Central, Biography, A&E, IFC, BBC America, FX, TNT, TBS, Palladium, Spike, CMT, Animal Planet, Nat Geo, Planet Green, Weather Channel, Travel Channel, Ovation, 3 Flix channels, 5 Epix, and Reelz.

So that's like 50 channels. If I got them for say $.75 a piece, that'd be like $37.50 a month and I'd get all the programming I want.

Nah...Fox News would survive. It's got a big political crowd that would support it fanatically...unfortunately.

I think stuff like ESPNNews would die, since all they have to do is put SportsCenter updates on (like they used to have) and do SportsCenter like a news broadcast like television networks do...except sports-centric.

You'd also see a lot of specialty channels go. Food Network might survive. Cooking Channel I don't think would. DIY probably wouldn't either. Plus, a lot of the other-than-English channels would probably falter too. Imagine 80-90M cable subscribers suddenly not paying even part of their bill toward Univision, Galavision, Telemundo, etc. HUGE impact.

I like the idea though. I want to pay only for what I want.

Cable and satellite now is like going to a grocery store and them only selling you food in packs with a variety of stuff you'll never eat included that you have to pay for anyways to get what you want.

It's really, in all honesty, unfair to us as consumers.

The word "a la carte" comes directly from french.

In fact it should be written "Ã* la carte".

I'm not French, never studied it, and only learned how to say "I don't speak French" in French so that French-speaking people know I don't speak it.

But, thanks for that tidbit of info. Soon as I learn how to make that character with my English keyboard...and remember how...I'll endeavor to appease your request
