GTX 580 now or wait for Kepler?

Thread Starter
Been gathering the parts for my first rig and there's a big hole where the graphics card should be.

I had finally decided on some flavour of the GTX 580 and now I hear about these fancy new Kepler models on the horizon.
Now from what I gather they were meant to be out this year but there's rumours that only mobile versions will make it this side of crimbo.

If it's a case of waiting a couple of months I'll wait but more than that i'ld just get a 580 now and sli it next year.

Anyone got any good guesses here on when the new desktop cards will see light?

At this point, I'd wait for Kepler. Should be coming in Dec of this year/January of next (unless Nvidia decides to pull another Fermi on it). Or, if you don't want to wait, just buy a cheaper card (like the 560Ti - still quite a bit of graphics horsepower) and sell it (for at least £100) when Kepler arrives.

Good advice, just wish I knew for sure!
I'll give that 560ti a look.

i think alot of us are in the same boat. im running 2 470's now and during the bf3 beta im getting around 100 fps from waht i gather the beta stock settings are about what medium will be in the final release. so if i want to run on high i am going to take a big performance hit. i could just get 2 580's and be done with it but that would slow my watercooling project down. idealy id like to water cool the cpu then get 2 watercooled keplar cards of 680+ varity but thinking ill be stuck at low settings for BF3 isnt settling well with me.
what to do what to do.

Get the 580 now, IMO. Next gen parts aren't coming any time soon, and both AMD/nvidia are starting from the bottom to top with their next gen parts. The first keplers available will be their budget parts, and according to fudzilla its looking like release will be late q1 or possibly q2 2012.

" on the horizon " in this industry is a long time.

Don't wait imo and enjoy the card, the 580 is still going to be a killer card when kepler comes out.

Get the 580 and enjoy it! If you are always waiting on the next big thing, you will always be waiting, and never have any fun.

Besides, Kepler cards are still quite a long time away. Spring of 2012 is the earliest they will come, mark my words.

I'd say you're looking at at least 3 months for Kepler and the most recent rumors I've seen have said that Nvidia will be starting with the weaker GPUs first, so you may be looking at even 5 months for a GPU more powerful than a 580. I can't tell you what to do but do consider the time that you could be playing games how you'd like to now instead of waiting, you can always get something better later on but if you want to be playing now then something coming later doesn't do you much good.

Kepler will most likely be PCI-e 3.0 as well, so if you're going to wait on Kepler you'll probably also need to buy the upgrade for native PCI-e 3.0 support. Otherwise it would be such a waste
