GTX 580 now or wait for Kepler? - Page 2

Take it from me:
  • I wanted a 580 back in December 2010
  • I then told myself I'd wait "a few months" for the 590/6990 and get that
  • When they got released 5 months later and turned out to be too hot, not very good overclockers, or too loud I decided to wait "several" more months for Kepler or AMD's 7970 since they were scheduled to be released in Q3 or Q4 of this year
  • Now they've been supposedly delayed to Q1 of 2012 and AMD plans on released their bottom end products first and Nvidia is reportedly releasing just a crappy FERMI-refresh

So I said screw all this crap, and I went out and bought a 580 a week ago and I'm happy with it. I don't plan on buying the GTX 680 or the AMD 7970 anymore, if anything I'll wait for Nvidia's 700 series and AMD 8000 series. I regret not buying the 580 a year ago cause I missed out on a lot of fun.

The PCI-e 3.0 could be a deciding factor....
Ok leaning more to the gtx580 then sly next year.
Give it a month then I'll have the cash anyway.

Thanks for the advice.

PCI-E 3 isn't a big deal on GPUs in the present IMO, and it's only a consideration on mobos because it's possible that you could still have that motherboard when GPUs that need PCI-E 3 to be viable come along. I can just about guarantee that this next generation of single GPU cards from both sides will not have any performance increase on a PCI-E 3 slot if they even support it at all.

If a 580 or even 590 are seeing 2-3% decrease in performance in a PCI-E 2 x8 lane compared to x16, then this next generation would need to be twice as powerful as those cards to even see that much of a difference going from PCI-E 3 down to PCI-E 2.

Kepler is actually around Q3 2012 from what i've been seeing, according to Nvidia they are concentrating on a die shrink fermi for mobile computing at the present time, and a 28nm variant of Fermi is coming to the desktop late Q4 2011 - Q1 2012.

So essentially the best your gonna get for a shortish wait is faster GTX580's that run slightly cooler and are more power efficient. Kepler seems a long way off.

I got my GTX 580 early December, and was afraid a would have to buy new one, already one year later! But i thought i would wait for a better version of Kepler, preferably a "toy" water cooled type like pny's. But in half a year a GTX 580 will only be a medium card with too little memory, as going to 28nm means they have the dubbelt chip areal to play with! So i would go with something like a GTX 560 TI. I don't think a 580 is much of an upgrade on 470 sli through.

for me itd be 1 580 now (with another in sli when the 600 series comes out and prices drop) and probs even skipping the 600 series. Thered be so much graphics horsepower in there that the 680's would need to be VERY special and powerful (but if its what the 580 was to the 480, a 5-10% performance increase then its now worth it IMO)

I'm probably going to buy 2 560Ti's and SLI them, but if the 500 series gets a price drop before the end of this year then I'm going to SLI 580's.

I say don't wait for the Kepler unless you want to wait till as early as Q2 2012 for decent models, go buy a 580 and then next year SLI with another one if need be.
