I agree it is frustrating to not get a sneak preview of the truly awesome aspects of what battlefield is all about, but acting like it's a big deal that the public doesn't get to test the "entire" game before they release it is absurd.
Of course there are differences, but that does not affect the validity of the analogy. The consumers, no matter what product, should get what what he or she paid for. This is true for any business transaction. If I pay $60 for a game, I don't want to pay for a defunct game with many bugs that can affect my playing experience. This concept holds true for any product, you should get what you paid for. They don't have to release any part of the product if I didn't pay for it, I totally agree. But the thing is, they aren't. If I cancel my preorder, I know that I will not get the game after the Beta is over. They are not giving me anything. It is a beneficial trade for both parties: they get feedback, and I get entertainment. They would not release an open beta if it was not beneficial to them in some way. I never said they should release the whole game, I am saying they should allow the beta testers to test a good representative of the game. You can't test all the ways a car can crash, but you can at least get a good representative. The map "Metro" is not a good representative of the whole game, and thus, it does not qualify as a good sample for testing.

They should all be thrown 20 years back into the past to see how life was like before all these technological toys were invented. Then just then maybe they will develop a true understanding of it and appreciate it. but i doubt it.
Not all kids are like this. I'm 17, born in '93. Anytime I've given access to something ahead of time like a BETA, Alpha or just anything in general for testing purposes, I give constructive feedback. I don't just say "This sucks, give me this." or "What the heck is this crap? Where is this?"

It's just that the community now a days sucks. As gaming becomes more and more mainstream, more jerks join the scene as well.

Let me help you understand a few things before you dig yourself into a deeper hole.

DICE allowing us to play they're game is in fact a privilege. It allows you to decide whether you like the game or not - all at THEIR expense. They've spent tens of millions of dollars in development costs and risk losing potential buyers that don't understand the Beta testing process.

Now, where do those development funds come from? The answer: EA. You obviously haven't been paying attention lately. EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, Eidos, or any other publisher you can name doesn't give a rats ass about the consumer. They only care that games are released ON TIME! With twice the development costs usually funneled into marketing, they have projected sales figures to meet and obligations to their share holders to uphold. Who gets the short end of the stick? The developer, having to pick up the slack and fix everything after release.

The next time you want to point fingers at a development team, you walk into their offices and tell me that they're not under-staffed, under-budget, and working overtime.

I don't know what strange world you live in, but there is NO WAY an open beta is going to give access to every single element of a game being tested.

Open beta's (traditionally) give access to an element of a game (in most recent cases multiplayer) so that people can beta test things like the networking code, overall graphics engine, etc. Open beta's usually don't bring extreme graphics, the best map or even the best concepts to they table. They bring enough to get you to try it, hopefully provide some feedback and get you excited enough from the glimpse that you want the game.

I hate to say it, but PC gamers (or at least the squeakiest of them, the squeaky ones could well be a vocal minority) are among the most elitist, whiny and ungrateful humans roaming the face of the earth. I really feel like we are going to get to a point with devs/publishers give us the collective bird and just stop doing open beta testing.

And that REALLY sucks for PC gamers, given our wide variety of configurations and hardware. We NEED developers to do open betas, but yet we act like spoiled children when things don't go right (or in most cases, they just don't go the way WE wanted them to).
I never said that we should test the car in every way possible. I said that you should a get good representative of all the crashes that can occur, and test those scenarios. There is no way to test all the ways a car crash can occur, and those, you can only test a sample of them. This is my point about the BF3 beta. The "Metro" map is not only small, but also lacks vehicles. And because large scale maps and vehicles are essentially the selling point of the game, they should release them to the public to test the bugs.

That is all I am saying. Also, you generalization about PC Gamers is absurd. It honestly saddens me to see this kind of ignorance and prejudice on OCN.

This is taken out of contest, I remember that thread and people were "whinning" because DICE wasnt testing 64 player conquest map which is the ONLY battlefield experience fans like instead they are testing a consolized map. Its now certain to everyone that DICE doesnt give a damn about its fans and doesnt mind rolling out a broken game; at least to those fans who have brought their games the last decade just to play the classic conquest mode with 64 players.

Yes the people that complain about beta being buggy, now those are the people that need to get slapped. Its beta it will be buggy.

What I did complain about was, the way the squad management is being implemented. They confirmed that its working as intended and that is just retarded, I don't want to be managing my squad in a web based browser while i am in game.
Alright I gotta agree with you on that bit.

Contrary to popular belief, there is a life past your monitor, hell, there's this thing called grass too, it's this green stuff that grows on this brown / black stuff called dirt.

Anyways, the beta is... well bug ridden, as it is assumed to be, it's our job as testers to report bugs, not whine like babies that it isn't perfect, and we thought this was the full version of the game. It's absurd. The beta is a privilege not a right. DICE owes us nothing.

People on OCN, especially OCN, are huge proponents of PC games and the PC platform, well guess what, it's whiners and moaners like these that drive companies / studios away from our community. Do we expect a higher caliber gaming experience? You bet, but there is no reason, absolutely no reason, to whip out 12 year old attitudes and whine at the one studio that is catering to us before all else.

It's times like these that I'm personally disgusted to be part of the PC gaming community. It's absolutely asinine to act this way. Whether for a beta [in this case], or even in real life. Downright pathetic.

The only hope left really is that all these babies complaining about a 1 month old coded beta is that they cancel their pre-orders, we as a community don't need people like this to populate our servers.
Didn't know you worked at DICE because you understandably took offense into a statement I made about your product. Don't fret, I uninstalled your crappy game before I left for the football game this morning.

I always get a good laugh when people say it's a privilege, when we are doing their job for them, except well...they get paid, and we...get the privilege of giving them our money, it really is quite a remarkable concept.

If people are complaining about the map, maybe it's because the map sucks, which it does, maybe people would be more forgiving about your game, and more constructive if an enjoyable product was given to test. I'm sure the same end can be met with a better map.

Then again I understand, you nor your company can ever be at fault, we should be grateful that you exist to collect our money. Though I do agree with you on one thing, I hope a sizable number of people do cancel their preorders, so the video game section can be more than the battlefield 3 section.

Sorry, but DICE made a huge mistake making Metro the Beta map, especially making it RUSH, stupid move. The should have released an excellent demo instead.

At least the BF2 demo had a good map, Gulf of Oman. ---> Jets, Tanks, 64 people.

Nice job DICE.
