[KT] Frustrated Battlefield Rep Unloads on Ungrateful Community - Page 5

3-5 weeks before release is typically when a game goes "gold", meaning unless the beta is a version designed to be lightweight for easier/quicker downloading, you're most likely playing the final product.

EA and DICE are businesses, they are supposed to satisfy customers, and by customers I mean future customers also. What he did is compromising that. Under no circumstances should a company representative lose his mind like that.

He is not even coherent:

And let's face it: an open Beta is a huge opportunity for the developer to have FREE bug reports, performance statistics, suggestions etc, before the game goes out to the general public.

And he has the nerve to call it a privilege ? This is a business, and as such benefits go both ways. He is talking as if the developer is not benefiting one iota from this open Beta. Not to mention some of those 1.5 million pre-orders are also playing it, no ?

Go talk to Microsoft and understand the success of Windows 7 and how they gained respect for making available the Beta and then the Release Candidate, both of which were quite stable.

And you guys show sympathy for this guy ? Some of you are even saying "yes, even previous Battlefield games had bugs on launch day, but there's nothing like it."

Please, stop. Unless you like to be free guinea pigs and be insulted in the end.

Oh, and by the way, this whole paragraph was NOT written by the community manager, but by the Kotaku writer:
LOL the guy didn't merely rant as much as he should have. And what the hell do you mean by calling him incoherent when he said that its a privelage and not a right... IT IS A PRIVELAGE. It could have been a closed beta where a select/specific people would test the game and provide the encessary feedback to bugs. The fact is they were actually nice and allowed for a open beta where everyone gets to try the game out. This whole thing is getting way to out of hand and some of these whining little kids need to get the hell out. No one is a guiniea pig, you have a choice, you either play and give helpfull criticizm or you dont. I sure did not get insulted, and I am actually glad someone stepped in and took action. My opinion they shouldve done like Blizzard does with their betas. See if there is stuff like this going on forums with their games.

What do I mean when I say he is incoherent ? Read it again:

Quote:
"the beta is a privilege, not a right," unless you got a key with a pre-order
He is trying to make a point but then comes up with a HUGE exception, being that the game has 1.5 million pre-orders. So, many people DO have a right, according to his own flawed argument.

And if you read my reasoning you'll understand it's not a privilege in the first place, it's a business. You just don't feel like it because you are not paying actual money. You are paying in goods, with your system, providing FREE technical and possibly personal feedback, and spending your time playing it.

If the reasoning for being grateful for playing a game was valid, people who love chocolate, and taste chocolate for a living shouldn't be paid a salary either, right ?

Also, an open Beta also works as a marketing tool.

Also, the fact that the thread got deleted is most probably because DICE rightfully thought the Community Manager's attitude was not professional at all.

I agree that gamers should be reporting glitches, bugs, and other problems inherent to the game itself (there are quite a few). But whining about Caspian Borders not being demoed in the Beta is just silly. It is a Beta, not the full game! It's perfectly understandable that there's currently only one playable map. The rest will be in the official release of the game!

The ignorance in this thread and the EA forums is astounding.

I don't have a problem with what he said, he's usually a fantastic community manager and when you consider how ungrateful and rude most of the community has been I'm not surprised he finally lost is professionalism and said what he was thinking.

Proper constructive feedback is what a company needs with regards to any bugs in a game pre release. Not whining, not stupid smart ass comments, not negative feedback and certainly not personal attacks. None of those help at all.

This beta has shown the huge issue with online gaming communities, obviously its not a new thing but it certainly isn't doing anyone any favours. Saying that though there are plenty of people out there who do enjoy the games, are prepared to post structured, constructive and helpful feedback, and are at best polite.

You can have sympathy for his attitude on a personal level, but you cannot tolerate it at the professional level. What he said has no excuse, and I wouldn't be surprised if the thread got deleted shortly aftwerwards because of that.

As a game developer, DICE is well aware that there are people who don't respect other's work, and should therefore not lose it's head. It's that simple, it's business as usual. They, and every other developer, get to hear that almost every day, and so does any other business that sells goods.

If a business were to start acting temperamentally like that, it would lose everybody's respect. Think about it. That is why the thread most probably got deleted.

Cleaned and Reopened
You are happy to discuss the topic provided you keep it civilized.

We should show these kids of this generation what we had to deal with in BF2. And see how much better it got after each patch. Ya, BF2 still has crazy bugs in it but BF2 was all about game play and the community.

Now a days, anything kids can get access to will QQ about it. When these forums open up for any game, I just post the bugs, specs, what I was doing etc. Although during the beta process if multiple have the same problem and they don't fix the issue (if it is the game not drivers etc) then that would entitle me to QQ but generally they will get it fixed.

I guess DICE didn't learn how from when other games go into beta and open up the forums, its just a QQ fest everywhere
post #49 of 272
Hmm, I'm inclined to see he lost his sense of professionalism, which I find inappropriate regardless of the situation. Especially since he is a community rep.

Not to mention most of those forum goers will not respond positively or with remorse. The backlash will probably be exacerbated thanks to his outburst which is never good for DICE.

I've been saying this on these forums in many a thread, and all I get is "BC2 was never this bad" or "The game should be more polished than this" or "This game sucks so hard..." followed by "I'm cancelling my preorder" or "I'm so glad I didn't preorder it" or (insert snide comment about obtaining an illegal copy of the game)

People don't seem to understand that any sort of build that is not the final build is going to have tons of bugs. Every game goes through stages of immense buginess. The purpose of this is not to test out the game and decide if you want to buy it or not (although getting a first look is definitely a plus). You're getting on to play the game so that the developers can gauge what bugs need to be fixed. Chances are that if one person is experiencing a bug, someone else out there is also experiencing the same bug, and it needs to be fixed. However, those bugs may not be apparent in the testing office. That's what we're here for; we have to tell them what bugs we're experiencing and test-drive the system to make sure it's working properly.

Again, this is not a demo. It's a beta test. By test, it's not a test of your enjoyment. It's a test for bugs and glitches. Mission accomplished on that front. However, there are a lot of people out there that are too childish to see that this is a beta test. Instead, they want a pure battlefield experience from the get-go. Too bad the world of computers doesn't work that way.

I just feel sorry for Dice, as this will probably hurt some of their sales. For me, however, I'm a fan, and I can guarantee that when I can afford it, I will buy this game.
