Best GTX 580 for SLI/first ever build help.

Thread Starter
So I'm planning on building my first rig. Right now, I have the MSI N580GTX Lightning Xtreme on my build. I'm trying to keep the build under $1750, but it'd be cool if I could get it under $1700, but that's not necessary.

I'll probably eventually either SLI the 580, or not even buy the parts until the 6xx series comes out and get a GTX 680 or GTX 670. Anyways, is the Lightning Xtreme good for SLI, or should I get a different card? What would be the best one for SLI?

Also, since this is my first time building, can you guys give my build a look and tell me if there is anything I should change for something better? Like the MOBO, is that a good motherboard?

Thanks

That is a solid stand alone card but for SLi I would go for this card:

Also, why not an SSD for OS and Programs?

Why would that card be better than the Lightning Xtreme? And I may think about adding an SSD.

Edit: Added this for a boot drive.

1 Lightning Xtreme will serve it's purpose.

However, if your wanting to SLI, then try 1 and see if it's enough power and add another one if need be.

Start with one and get your build the way you want, then see if you need the extra horsepower.

It's a smaller card and SLi would be easier in a case in regards to spacing. Also, the 3GB VRAM is overkill for one monitor. 1.5GB should be fine. Also, it's a matter of almost $100 that can be used on an SSD or other upgrade or saved for another 580.

EDIT: That's a good boot drive.

What about BF3? Will the 1.5 GB Vram be enough for Ultra settings with AA and other things @1080p?

Also, is the cooling on that 580 good?
1.5 GB VRAM is enough for 1080p. If you went Higher then you might need more VRAM but 1.5gb is enough.

Okay, also, are the Mobo and Case that I selected good ones? I could drop the SSD and get the Corsair 800D if I wanted, but I'd rather keep that SSD of course.

Both are pretty good. At those prices you can't go too wrong. I know the Antec is pretty solids as are ASRock mobos. You should be good to go.

Okay, now you providing false information. 1.5GB isn't enough for 1080p in SOME situations.

The Battlefield 3 Beta takes up 1.6-1.8GB of vram with SOME settings on Ultra. I know this from personal preference and experience.

SOME games WILL use more than 1.5GB vram, so OP, go ahead and get the 3GB card if you wanting a dubbed out Bf3 experience.

Crysis 2
Battlefield 3
Metro 2033

Get one, forget about it. Need a second? Then buy it down the road.
