Best GTX 580 for SLI/first ever build help. - Page 2

motherboard and case are all good, no problems there.

do not worry about the SLI 580 power requirement and heat output, your case and psu will handle it nicely

also, id go for the lightning over the EVGA SC anyday, the case has more than enough room for either card. If he doesnt need 1.5gb of VRAM then just get the twin frozr III, but the cooler on the MSI cards is SOOOOOOOO much better than the relatively stock ones that EVGA uses.

The Battlefield 3 Beta takes up 1.6-1.8GB of vram with SOME settings on Ultra. I know this from personal preference and experience.

SOME games WILL use more than 1.5GB vram, so OP, go ahead and get the 3GB card if you wanting a dubbed out Bf3 experience.

Crysis 2
Battlefield 3
Metro 2033

Get one, forget about it. Need a second? Then buy it down the road.
Some say that at 1080p all 1.5GB of VRAM are being utilized but that doesn't justify spending the extra money and space for 3GB. 1.5GB of VRAM should work great. 3GB would be a guarantee but overkill.

Overkill? This is OCN, when is anything, ever, overkill?

Back on topic, yes, SOME say that it is plenty, and it is, in some games/situations.

But with the way these games (the Beta, Crysis2, and Metro) they use a ton of vram, and the Lightning Xtreme was one of his choices, and would be more than enough to fulfill his needs without spending an extra $500-$600 on another GPU.

Single card solution, with more than enough vram to game and do everyday things on, room to SLI if need be, and they stay cool without being under water and OC like a dream, I don't see a problem if he has the budget for it.

Fair enough. Go for the MSI Lightning Extreme.

I vote for the lightning xtreme, as well. Peace of mind is priceless.

Well then, looks like that SSD is going bye bye till I can save up more for one, because w/SSD I would be at $1835.

How quiet or loud would 2 lightning xtremes be in SLI ?

I know the fan can be pretty damn loud when ramped up, so surely 2 of them dumping a lot of heat inside the case would cause them both to ramp up pretty high ?
