6950 drivers crash windows

Thread Starter
I just installed my new Sapphire 6950 and everything works fine until I install the drivers. I've tried it from windows update, from the included cd, and from the AMD website. Every time I install them and the system restarts, windows boots to the desktop background....and that's it. No icons, no mouse, can't ctrl+alt+del, nothing. I have to do a hard reset, boot in safe mode, and recover to before the drivers. Any idea what is going on? I'm running Windows 7, if that helps, and I'm assuming the card is working because my monitor is running through it. I can't get anything (gpu-z, etc) to recognize the card however, but I was assuming that's from not having the drivers installed.

Did you remove old drivers before put the new card in? If not, remove it with the new 6950 in the system, restart then reinstall.

By any chance you are using Afterburner, also remove it then try again.

I figured that may have been the problem and removed them but I'm still having the issue. I haven't been able to find anything else that would be interfering.

I did, there's nothing on my system that could be interfering. I actually just did a clean install of windows so there's hardly anything on here atm.

Yea, do that and it doesn't take long to do rather than troubleshooting for days without result.

Edit: Update and install all available from Windows Update, just don't update AMD driver from there.

Also, don't forget to install all drivers for motherboard and chipset.

I don't think so.

This is my old mobo that I'm using while waiting on my RMA but I assume it's compatible.

If you installed AMD driver from Windows Update, there was the problem. Reformat and fresh OS install, install motherboard and chipset drivers. Let's know how it goes.
