Need help - Gaming Build

Thread Starter
Well I think I'm ready to build my first computer
It will be made for gaming/heavy multitasking
Games in mind: FPS like BF3

So I was thinking of an i7 since I will also be multitasking heavily

I'm thinking of getting either the HAF 932 or NZXT Phantom, unless you guys have another suggestion.

Also SSD and a HDD

As for the budget, no lower than $800 and no higher than $1,500

I also need a 7.1 soundcard w/ Dolby Digital Live for my Astro A40s + Mixamp

So here's what I came up with so far

* Case: HAF 932/NZXT Phantom
* SSD + HDD
* Card: Not sure, either GTX 560 or GTX 570

-------------------------- EDIT ------------------------------------------
Alright so here is the final product!
Everything I have is compatible with each other and fine?
Any other suggestions?

Have a look at a 6950, they are amazing bang for buck cards, they beat the gtx 560ti.

If you Xfire them you need a good 650Watt PSU.

Some people told me to get a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ fan, or should I get the liquid cooler you suggested?
As the the case, I've also learned that Full Tower cases are better for future upgrades so that's why I told I'd pick the HAF 932.
The Graphics card, someone said the GTX 560 TI Hawk outperforms the 6950 and has the Twin Frozr III
I also need a DVD Reader/Burner

i7 2600k is worthless for gaming. go for this :

CPU : i5 2500k 200$~
Mobo : ASUS Sabertooth 200$~
GPU : 1 or 2 HD 6950 MSI Twin Forzr 2GB 250$/ea
PSU : 750watts Corsair/XFX/Seasonic/Antec... 100-140$
HDD : Spinpoint F3 1TB or WD Black Caviar 1TB 60$~
RAM : Corsair Vengeance or G.Skill 2x4GB DDR3 1600mhz 50$
CPU Cooler : As said above ^ or H80, Antec H20 also 80$~
CASE : HAF X or NZXT Phantom. The 932 isn't worth it.
SSD : Above one is great, but not really usefull for gaming, at least not that big/expensive one

EDIT : For DVD, any OEM DVD reader/writting will do 20$~ and HAF 932 is just out-dated. HAF X is much better or the NZXT which looks very nice Red/White/Black

Alright so I'll get the HAF X case

So the i5 2500k will do good with heavy multitasking in the background (CPU Extensive programs) while gaming? Because that's what I thought the i7 2600k was for.

PSU, get 750watts instead of 650?

Is liquid cooling easy to install?

What's the different of the two mobos?

Humm, well, the i7 will do better if you have multitasking in background, but tbh, I wouldn't game with anything heavy in background on whatever CPU.

Well, 650w is limit for a Crossfire or SLI system. If you take 570s or 6950, I would go with 750w PSU. anyways it's not much more. 20-30$ save ~

Liquid Cooling is a closed loop system and just as easy to install as any aftermarket cooler. It's not a big deal. It's not like a custom water cooling loop.

As fro mobos, nothing big of different. Sabertooth just have a few extra things. But both are from ASUS and will be great.

Good choice for HAF X.

Some of the above suggestions are good but I would definitely recommend some changes.

CPU: 2600k ($280) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070
CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 $65 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=Corsair%20H60)
MoBo: Asus P8Z68-V Pro ($200) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131730
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600 ($50) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820233180
HDD: W.D. Black 1TB ($75) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...%20black%201tb
PSU: Seasonic X750 ($160) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...7&Tpk=seasonic
GPU: MSI TFII 6950 2GB ($250) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127588
DVD: ($25) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204
SSD: 64GB Crucial M4 ($105) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148441

Total: $1210 give or take a few bucks.

This leaves you with ~$300 for which you can do the following:

1. I didn't mention a case because it seems like you haven't decided yet. I wouldn't go with a full tower unless you absolutely need the room (which, judging by your built, you won't even use half of it). Go with a mid tower and save yourself some money and space (Corsair 600T is a great option like others mentioned, as is the Corsair 500R).

2. You could upgrade the GPU to a GTX580 (recommend doing so). GTX580's run anywhere from $400 - $500 new depending where you buy (slightly more expensive for the 3GB versions). If you shop around on the OCN marketplace you can get one for ~$380 shipped for near-new condition cards.

3. Some people suggested getting a 128GB SSD, which you could do if you want. If you're just using the SSD as a boot drive, I would stick to 64GB and put your money somewhere else (like upgrading to a GTX580 - this will be a much better use of money for games, especially since FPS games don't benefit from an SSD at all).

Edit: the prices I list are "averages" and prices do tend to fluctuate a lot. If you look around for good deals and do a little shopping on the OCN marketplace, you could easily shave $100-$200 from the total cost of the parts I listed.

Smaller SSD drives are smaller, and all SSDs are slower ones they are filled around their half way point. I wouldnt have less then an 80GB drive for an OS drive. Its also a good idea to leave some of the drive not partitioned so it has extra space for GC, and will make it last longer as well. (does not apply to sandforce drives though)
