8800gts for dedicated PhysX?

Thread Starter
I just bought a GTX 460, wondering if it would help any of if I used my 8800gts as a dedicated PhysX card.

The only game I have that uses it is Mirror's Edge. Sooo dunno if it would help much. Plus I don't know if it'll be any useful having it suck more power out of my rig than necessary.

I would say just let your 460 handle it. I tried using a GTS250 (9800GTX) as PhysX and it lowered my performance over all.

there are a few people like myself that see that a physx card helps, I don't suggest the 8800 though, I have been looking at 9800gt and 430gt and 450 single slot and there are many games that use physx and many coming out as well. I can't tell you the best card to use yet as I am still testing and looking for the perfect sli 460's with physx card combo.

I am trying to get it figured out before Battlefield 3 downloads on my PC, I also just bought RAGE which has it as well (physx) but it unlocks in 2 days I think so wont make that one lol

You know an 8800GTS is the same basic card as a 9800GTX and GTS250 right?

The 512mb one is. They're all the g92 128sp gpu. The 320mb and 640mb are the older G80 with only 96sp.
In progress.

um no there not when it comes to physx, even the 250 vs the 9800 which can sli together do not perform the same when it comes to a physx card

I can get links to many hardware reviews about this as I have been hunting it down for about two weeks or so. I don't make up the rules just try to live by them!

I am no expert on this but have heard about everything good and bad with physx card choosing, and I am stuck myself lol. I do not want another extra POS just collecting dust. But I do want the extra kick it gives when you have the right card installed, a extra 7~14fps avg is real nice but I like the minimum gain which I see even with my old extra lying around 9500gt!

It smooths out metro2033 and mafia 2 as well but will not help I fear in the newer games so that is why I am looking

A 9800GTX+ and GTS250 are identical cards using the G92b GPU, however the GTS250 comes in a 1GB variety which helps some. There is no difference between the 512MB models, its simply a rebadging. Both are faster than an 8800GTS but use the same basic GPU making them comparable for PhysX. Regardless, for me they were too slow to keep up with 570 SLI and performance increased by removing it.

From what I recall PhysX doesn't use the GPU's memory, only the processing power.

Yep, thats why I was saying they're all comparable using the same basic GPU (the helps some comment was for gaming use or whatever, not directed at PhysX).
