q6660 is shutting down

Hi!

I'm having problems with a friend pc. It have a q6660 + intel mother (i don't remember the exact model). It was very dirty, tons of dust, and very hight temps (over 80c after 2 mins in linx).
I cleaned all dust, and changed the thermal paste (was using the intel original paste). Now temps are much better, is around 62c in linx, 36-40 in idle, 50-55 in games (is not the best, i know, but still much better than before)

But now the pc is shutting down very often, and when i power up again, i hear the bios error sound of temp (and in the bios log, say "Thermal trip"), but is imposible because i was monitoring with hwmonitor at the moment that the system shuts down, and the temp was in 40c (i was using only firefox ^^). The second time that system shuts down, was in bios :S

I don't understand why the system is shutting down now with normal temps, and not before when temps was over 50c in idle, and 70-80 under load

I noticed that in the bios hardware monitor, it says "Processor Thermal Margin" was in 42c at time that the system shut down in bios, and temp in 41c, so i guess that the system it shuts down when reach 42c. If i don't bad remember, that value was much higher before. I'm guessing that value is when the system shut down, but im not sure, don't have too much experiencie with intel systems.

Some idea?

Test the system outside the case and see if it still shuts down randomly. Re-check if everything is well seated in the board, especially the PSU cables. If still fails, check if the PSU is still good to go.
if all the tests fail, maybe the baord is dying or something...

Might be worth checking if there is a option in the BIOS to shut the machine down if temp X is reached. Check around the Health Monitor Section of the BIOS.

Just reset the CMOS completely. See if that works.
I would start of by resetting the CMOS. Then unplug/replug everything back in, if you have thermal paste reseat the heatsink, reseat the RAM.

If that fails try this:

Disconnect everything except for mobo, cpu, video card, and memory. If it starts to boot then says no hdd try booting again with the hdd connected. There is a thermal shutdown on mobo's that may have accidently switched temps or turned on. Make sure the heatsink fan is plugged into you mobo.

Try this. If you havent done this already at least. Clean everything, and reseat everything as Matroska said above and see whats going on. Also set your BIOS as default just for kicks also. If that doesnt work then you can PM me and I can help you out a little better.

That dust has alot to do with it too so clean that out too, like get an air can and dust it out outside or something.

Well, i spend all afternoon working and no good results. This is what i tried so far:

Clear CMOS
Tried another PSU
Complete disassembly, clean all dust, new thermal paste

nothing worked, now i'm trying to get another s775 mother for try, but it will be hard (and hard to understand, the pc was working without problem when i came to me the first time)
Sometimes is shutting down in bios! so i can conclude that is not and SO or driver problem.

And temps are in 35-40c in idle.
