I think both would work well, though I am usually partial to the intel based chips for the high performance per core, and memory subsystem performance.

I would not bother getting the bulldozer chips unless you have big multi core friendly databases that need that power. A mid end xeon would do just fine. In my professional opinion. Im sure others will vouch for AMD Opterons but I prefer intel personally.

I have a 2600k @ 4.6Ghz running a WHS 2011 server while folding at the same time. It never had a problem getting the work done including streaming movies while doing backups or folding. If your worried about horsepower get a 2600k and forget about the rest.

Can confirm this as well.

Have my i7 980 workstation + server @ 4.35 with a few 2600k render nodes @ 4.9, one of which functions as my HTPC.

No problem whatsoever watching movies in the den off my workstation's drive while both machines sit at 100% CPU load and trade several dozen GB of info back and forth while I'm /popcorning.

Used to have some problems here and there until I switched my render destination folder to a RAMdisk on my workstation. World's best SSD!
