I probably wont use all my memory but as a professional photoshop user i've maxed out 8gb before in my work computer. (powermac g5)

Also creative suite is getting more bloaty and I'm moving into 3d with solidworks so thought I will give myself some breathing room in my new rig.

With current RAM costs there is no reason to not max out a board.

I upgraded my system on Sunday and when I purchased the new board I also purchased the full 24GB the box said would max it out.

I previously had 16GB of RAM and my VM usage made it very tight (90% usage by VMs) so the new amount will give a lot of breathing room. But I feel at the current rates, why not?

I have 8 gigs and usually never use more than 3. Only reason I have 8 is I got it for $35 AR.

If RAM was not so cheap now, would people so easily recomend 8+ gigs? The 4 gigs I took out cost me $120 for DDR3 1333. No way I would spend $200+ on RAM unless I absolutly had to have it.

Do most need more than 4, no, but with cheap prices right now, 8 is not a bad idea just for future proof since DDR3 has quite a few years left before DDR4 come mainstream.

As Robbo2 said earlier more ram does make it harder to over clock said RAM. So there is a reason not to max out your board. I went from 6 to 12 gigs, but my OC on my ram is a little shaky. I still get the same timing as I had on 6, but every now and then when I post, my over clock will fail and I need to re-enter the timing manually.
