To all the naysayers that you don't need more than 6 GB of RAM - Page 5

We are currently leaving in a remarkable time for us old timer users.

I started out on a ZX81 with 1KB of memory. Yup, 1000 bytes.
Then I needed more ram because I couldn't program all the games from the magazines so for my birthday I got the ram expansion pack. A whopping 16Kb! It cost a bit but I needed it.

Flash forward to me starting my carrear in computer graphics. I had a mac classic with 4mb of ram. It came with 1mb but I got the money together because I needed it for photoshop.

At every stage of my computer use RAM has been a luxury, you just bought what you could and yearned for a little more.

Now today, it's a golden age for ram. It's cheap. Very cheap. Ok 4GB may do you for now. But what about when the next OS comes around the gobbles up a bit more of your ram with it's new killer feature. And because it's cheap we're more likely to see more demand as developers expect you to have more. Ok you could just buy it then.

But what if it's not cheap anymore?

Wouldn't take much to send prices up again. A sudden demand in the market, a manufacturer going bust. Even natural disasters can have a big impact.

So in my opinion, the goings good. Fill yer boots.
If bench markings your thing you can always just install what you need for now cherry picking the best and keep the rest in case of future need because the trend is going one way in terms of how much ram is needed.

I will tell most people that right now. Most here don't need more than 4 (and in the general population, 2 will do just fine).

But with the price of RAM as cheap as it is, why not get 8.

Honestly, the 4GB thing doesn't work for laptops much. I tend to hit the 4GB RAM limit and crash often. However, I also almost never shut off my laptop and have additional programs like AIM/Skype (I used to have Firefox on as well but that just kinda kills me even faster).

On my sig rig, I hit around 5-6GB... mostly because I seem to can't stop multitasking (sometimes it kills me in SC2/HoN )

I do have the opinion though that most people don't have these issues and can operate under 4GB are people who make a little bit more efficient use of their resources.

AIM/Skype don't use that much memory.... nothing to make note of...

Multitasking does not necessarily mean high memory usage. Most applications don't use that much memory. If an application is not actively being used, it can be moved to the paging file as well.

Heh 2 GB of ram. My folding machine uses a constant 1GB of its 2 and in gaming alone my laptop bumps up against is 4GB. Not to count I aint your grandmother. I would like enough ram to give my virtual machine 4GB and still have a chunk left over for buffering video going to disk.

Most people don't belong to overclock.net or overclock for that matter.
