x4 925 to x4 965

Thread Starter
believe it or not you can order cpu's off walmarts web site. they are more expensive but i had a $150 gift card sitting around. i bought a x4 965(3.4) and will swap it with my curent x4 925(2.8). any idea if i will see much of a performance increase with gaming? currently bf3 beta on high settings push the 925 cores into the high 80's with a core or two in the high 90's relating to usage.
Hardly any games use 3-4 cores, so you probably won't see any difference that often. BF3 you might, but if it wasn't even using 100% of your 925 then you probably won't get a very noticeable impact.

Funny walmart selling chips haha

I am looking into a new psu and adding another 6870 for christmas so I figured I needed more power on the CPU. The x4 925 has a locked mulit and the 965 is unlocked. I might give an over clock a shot with the new chip. I have never oc'ed before.

honestly, you won't see too much of a difference. I had the 560 unlocked to quad core underclocked to 3.0 GHz to have stability before and I went from that to a 975 overclocked to 4.0 GHz for a while and I didn't ever notice any real world differences in applications or games. Benchmarks will probably give you some good performance differences.

The 965 will overclock higher, run cooler and being a C3 have a better IMC. They generally hit 4ghz with ease especially the newer chips that are coming out. The 45nm fabrication has really matured now and they are pumping out some great clocking chips.

Well, I guess it's a good idea, But only because it runs much more cooler and will be easier to overclock

Not worth it. Save your cash for an AM3+ board and the AMD FX processor, which is out in a week.

Is your 925 c3? If your overclocking I'd doubt you will see any noticeable difference between the two. It might be easier to get higher clocks with the unlocked multi but my c3 925 runs cool and stable at 4ghz 24/7.
