Need some help with upgrade

Thread Starter
This is the situation. I had my 4 year old rig, Athlon x2 5600+, 3 gigs of ram, gt 240 (gddr5). My dad bought a cheap-o compaq computer, it had a sempron processor, but I went out and bought a phenom II 840 for $50! at microcenter.

Soo, now I am on my "new" rig, which is just a rebuild of this compaq. 4 gigs of ddr2, phenom 2 840 @ 3.2ghz, gt 240, 220 watt psu...so anyways. I think I am going to get a new video card, and a larger power supply, but im in need of some help. Been thinking about picking up a 4850 or so and a cheapo psu.

I don't really have a budget, but I dont want to build some $2000 beast. I ended up just upgrading from old to new for $50 and figure its time to just get some new stuff.

Also, i'd rather go as cheap as possible. but again..no budget really...its fairly odd I guess.

only activities I get into on the computer are little bit of light gaming, home movies (1080p crap that my other computer couldn't seem to handle to well) Thats about it.

I would be looking at something like a AMD 6850 video card. They are perfect for light gaming and can do 1080p playback without issue. If you want something with a little more gaming power the 6870/6950 or the GTX560ti if you want to go team green!

Any good quality 550 watt psu will run that system comfortably. You should really consider a good power supply as it really is the backbone of your system. Go for something like corsair/seasonic/antec/silverstone etc.

Any quality 400w would run that system depending on which gpu you pick. Comfortably. Antec earthwatts 380W, cx430v2, rosewill green 500w, ocz zs 550w Would all be psu's that i would consider.

I suggest the rosewill green 530W for $50, and a GTX460 1GB, which can be found for around ~$160-180. The Asus DirectCU GTX460 is a popular one usually available for pretty cheap.

Hey guys! I went and bought a GT 545....but after researching to much, I think I might go back and get the 550ti. Same cost, much better performance. Got a cheapo thermolake 400w power supply also.

The 550 Ti is a good upgrade. For the PSU, I think the Antec EA-430 will be perfect.

That's very odd that you stumbled on a GT545. Most of them were sold to OEMs only. The GDDR5 version of a GT545 is a respectable low-mid-range option if you can find it at the right price. It should perform better than a DDR5 version of a HD6670. However, the DDR3 version (which as far as I know, is the only one offered as a non-OEM) of a GT545 would almost certainly take a ~35% hit on performance, which would probably drop it out of contention as a useful buy in the GPU market. Interestingly enough, the DDR3 version was usually shipped with 1.5GB or 3GB of VRAM, an unheard of amount in this performance category.... I'm not sure what use it would have.

If you managed to pick up the DDR5 version of that GT545 for ~$100 or less, then it's worth holding on to unless you think you need a more powerful card. If you picked up a DDR3 version, at any price, probably best to return it. If you spent more than ~$110 on the GT545, then you may as well just pick up a 550Ti for a few dollars more.

I can't see where they said that . All I see is they don't want to spend 2K which my choices were no where near.

Reason they do this is because there are three memory dies on the card of 512.

It is the DDR3 version and I stupidly paid $140 out the door. It was like $120ish, 115 maybe.

I hadn't heard anything about the card other than its a "disabled" 550, so I figured what the hey. But, It plays everything I throw at it currently. Even plays BF3 on default @ 40 fps on my native resolution. I might return it for a similarly priced 550ti. But I really don't feel like taking the card back out. But i might as well. Also plays SC2 on Ultra (dunno frames), Modern Warfare 2 on high with 4xAA and 2x AS, Dead Island on High, Team Fortress 2 with everything all the way up except the shadows. I play with this off anyways.
