I can get an Asus Xonar DG (new) or an Asus Xonar DX (used) both for the same price, of $40. What do you think would be a better option for my JVC RX700's for music/gaming?

Do you need to encode multi-channel digital bitstreams on the fly?

No. All I do is play SC2, CS:S and TF2 and listen to alternative rock. I would also like to be able to take advantage of my 320kps mp3's.

Where can you find the DX for $40? I think the only advantage the DG has over the DX is AMP for headphones that don't have their own. Everything else points to the DX.

Your onboard solution can certainly handle that...

I know that. However, which of the 2 will be better for my uses?

I could get the DX + Fiio E5 for ~$55... I think that that would be a good choice, however the DX would be second hand...

320Kbs .mp3 is childs play compared to .wav or .flac. That's where a dedicated sound card will show the most improvement. But no matter what, a sound card will beat out integrated (unless said motherboard has it's own onboard dedicated solution).

i voted DX

i dont think that getting a PCI card is wise now

and the DX is better card than the DG , and BTW the RX700 are only 48 ohms , on-board sound can drive them easily no need for the amping
