That being said, the battery itself in the ipad2 has a footprint much larger than the iphone4/5--about 2-3 times larger just by eye. I still don't think battery technology has advanced much, if at all, so by scaling back the battery, the usable life on the same processor set may not be impressive.

IMHO, times like this is where I'd sooner keep the current hardware capabilities--which is faster than anything anyone will be using their phone for--in the interest for improvements in battery life. For example, I wonder if they looked into clocking down the A5 CPUs and GPU in the interest of getting better battery performance--I'm sure even with doing that, the architecture is still faster than the previous gen. They may be using an A5, but we have no idea how fast yet.

I mean, where are current phones falling short in terms of hardware speed capabilities? No one's doing any transcoding of media files, and do we really need angry birds, or whatever the latest and greatest game is, to load 1 second faster?

@OP:

Okay, let's wait till it's released and then we'll see how powerful it ends up being and how much battery it ends up eating. Speculation does nothing good.

And yes, I am tired and don't feel like debating your points all over again to reach the conclusion that you think it will be a plethora of times as powerful while eating the same or less, and I think that it will be more powerful at the cost of battery life; none of them being correct because the device hasn't even been released biggrin.gif

Its pointless really. Apps will take time to be used for iPhone 5 considering so many people have iPhone 4.

It's good to see things progressing but how much processor power does a phone need?
Whilst I do play the odd game on my iPhone it's not the easiest interface for gaming.

For that I mainly use my ipad1 playing plants v zombies. My psp's gathering dust and the 3DS impulse buy is loosing it's luster.

This. I've got an iPhone4, and I don't care to upgrade quite yet. The only big improvement that can be made is battery life, but even then it would have to at least double for it to make a real difference. I mean, ~4 days is already pretty good, but being able to charge it only once a week would make things so much easier.

It's not like it used to be, back with the 2G and 3G. Those were such crappy phones - they were stupidly slow, had horrible battery life, no storage space, and iOS crashed so often it was like using WinME all over again. Anything was an upgrade.

What's the point of a handheld gaming device if you're using it on your sofa? 60" screen > 6" screen.

When the price drops to $299 I'll get one.

Looks like I'll be getting one on the 31st of Neveruary.

The difference is having state of the art games on mobile devices, for example Infinity Blade looks great but it looks a whole lot better on the iPad 2 than it does on the iPad 1.

Haha, fair enough.

There's no reason to think that the SGX543 (single core) will use any significant amount of power more than the SGX535, in fact it might even end up using a little less despite being twice as powerful.

And unless you're gaming or doing anything GPU intensive, you won't need both cores. So for the most part, the power consumption should remain very similar. The A5 as I've explained, shouldn't be a problem either.

We'll see soon enough. Perhaps Apple will only use one SGX543, but I really hope not.

You play your DS way too much!

When going to the beach you should be swimming, jetskiing, playing volleyball, drinking pina coladas, picking up chicks, and [secretly] hoping that a big wave almost takes off a hot girl's bikini top so you can get a peek - not lying there with your face buried in a DS for so long that you need an extra battery pack to keep it going. You might as well stay at home.

As much as Apple disgusts me, I'm actually anxious to see what the iPhone "5" or "4GS," whichever it is, brings to the table. I was on a cruise all weekend and on CNN I saw their tech reporter saying that the iPhone 5 is only FINALLY bringing the features that the typical average Android phone already has. What I'm anxious for is what the Android manufacturers are treating us with next. devil.gif
