Building a new rig for BF3...is it worth getting a 120hz monitor?

Hey guys!

So, I'm building a new rig for Battlefield 3. I've been doing my research on monitors, and I have decided that a 120hz monitor is the way to go, as far as FPS's are concerned.

I was just about ready to order one, when the thought came to my head "is my build even going to be able to put out 120-ish fps, to take advantage of 120hz?"

If it isn't, I might as well just get an IPS monitor.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Well, as has been said, a 580 would not be enough for BF3 at Ultra settings. But with a SLI setup, and some tweaking the settings, I'd guess you could get some decent frames from a 120 Hz. Problem is, that getting that high FPS, consistently, in a brand new, high end game like that, is gonna take a lot of horsepower. I have not yet played the beta, so I am not sure how the fps is at the moment.

But a 120 Hz monitor is wonderful, if you can get the FPS for it.

Yea, that's what I've heard! I've heard it's absolutely amazing.

But, I've also heard it can throw some issues, if you are only pulling 40-60 FPS, but on a 120 hz monitor...

p.s. I'm not interested in 3d at all, for gaming. This 120hz would be purely for beautify-ing my games (:

I'm planning on doing the same thing, getting one for 2D. But then I'd have to play at lower settings, or be disappointed with it, and then I'd prolly feel like I had to upgrade... Again.

with SLI GTX 580...i'd def. get 120hz no question. even if u can't hit 120 fps with BF3 maxed out , u should be able to get triple digits with some setting tweaks...not to mention almost all other games, besides bf3, should get you some seriously high fps as well.

If you had 1 gfx card...or low/medium end sli...than maybe be more 50/50 between the 2 panels...but with highend sli....def. 120hz...if you are a gamer that plays a lot/mainly shooters.

Best 120hz Monitors

Planar SA2311W
Asus VG236HE
Samsung S23A750D
Samsung S23A950D

Samsung S23A750D probably has the best image quality of the 4..cost about $400..and has glossy screen. Planar has matted screen and like $300. Asus is $300 and glossy. Samsung S23A950D is like $500 and looks fancier than the S23A750D. might want to research them yourself tho.

Yeah, go ahead, get the 120hz. If you don't mind the game looking like as..er.. crap that is. I'll stick with the beautiful IPS thank you.

In a BF game you're not going to be able to take advantage of 120hz. This isn't counterstrike, or quake.

We'll ive seen Samsung S23A950D in store, wasn't able to game on it...it was quite nice. the image quality was good as well...tho i didn't have an ips side by side to compare (i have seen an ips). There are many other TN panels that look like crap tho...but the 4 i mentioned above i think are pretty decent if you haven't been using IPS your whole life. IPS is very nice .. really can't go wrong with either. but imo..with sli gtx 580 (that can generate 100+ fps)...for someone that plays a lot of shooters...120hz might be better for them.

personally, if your rig can pull 90+ fps..id go 120hz. if not, like for many of us that get between 0 - 60 fps, then i would def. go IPS. between 70-89 fps...its debatable imo..depends on person imo.120hz will always be smoother than ips at any frame rate..but has diminishing returns as your fps goes down...so its benefits aren't as noticeable the less frames your rig can pull. ips will always look great (best IQ) at any frame rate..so there is a trade off. it's personal preference in how you draw the line. For me..it looks something like this...

Overall Advantage :: IPS vs. 120hz (for most people, who equally care about image quality & tearing)

[0 - 69 FPS] -------- [70 - 89 FPS]------------ [90+ FPS]
[IQ wins] ----------- [IQ = Refresh Rate]---- [Refresh Rate wins]
[Photography] ---- [Everything Else]-------- [First-Person Shooters]
[IPS] ---------------- [IPS or 120hz] ---------- [120hz]

Interesting comment. Completely wrong but interesting otherwise.

I'd spend some time proving how inaccurate your statement is but I fear it would be wasted...

This.

I was so dead set on IPS/high res till I saw the S27A950D in person. 120hz is just on a different level than IPS, and unless you're photo/video editing the 120hz is worlds ahead in gaming.
