BUILDING a pc as in, piecing one together (ordering parts) for assembly.

I run a Fuji 19'' LCD @ 1280x1024. one of the old non widescreen square monitors. its fine, i love it. it enables me to run games at higher details then with a bigger monitor. most people doubt when i say very few games bring my dated system to its knees, but its true.

GTA IV is the only game in my collection that i cannot run maxed. especially with the realism, NYC and high res texture mods.
Yeah but you game on a near console resolution...

Though if you can run metro 2033 maxed out at that resolution with hardware that old thats still pretty impressive

May I ask what demanding games you have in your collection?

Vertical resolution is the only thing that matters for image clarity in games, horizontal affects field of view when in relation to the vertical.

This means that his 1280x1024 theoretically should look nearly as good as 1920x1080 image clarity wise, biggest difference being 1920x1080 having wider field of view.

And it's not "nearly console resolution" in that sense.

No. It's not simply pixel count, I explained it above.

For image clarity, only the vertical resolution matters. (if we simplify it to not include panel quality etc) And 1024 is practically almost 1080.

Though, it depends on how we look at it. Graphics perspective, it's practically as pretty as 1080p (not including possible differences in panel quality). Performance wise, it's somewhat easier to run.

Usually if a console gamer thinks consoles are better graphically. They are too blind to see the difference. Don't try, the guys an idiot and wouldn't be able to tell.

Well that's all fine and dandy for someone who's been playing on a PC since 1995, what about someone who is only just starting out?

Your judging by your own experience level rather than that of someone who has no experience, a common problem I see on sites like this. People like you, or even myself, expect others to know better when they quite simply don't. Step into the shoes of someone who is starting out for the very first time. Of course they're going to include a OS into their cost. I know I have done many times. I myself didn't know any better until I read this thread (though I have used the same key on a different PC in the same house before).

It's not near console resolution anyway. Console resolution is determined by the developers coding the software not the systems capabilities of rendering it.

You need to take into account that console gamers don't sit a foot away from their 1920x1080 display. The resolution and aliasing differences don't always make a difference when you're sat 6 feet away from a 32" 1920x1080 HDTV.

It's like Crysis, on my monitor I have to turn AA on but on my HDTV I don't need to. You can't really base opinions on screenshots because it's what the game looks like when running that matters.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, I can just see how people can view a console game as good looking. I play FIFA12 alot currently and it loks pretty awesome sat 6 feet away on my couch on a 32" HDTV.

Also they may have never seen mods, or even a maxxed DX11 game running side by side.

Don't be so quick to judge.
