Is the 2560mb 570 better?

Thread Starter
I have a msi GTX 570. Here's a link to it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127552

I'm thinking about getting a second card to go SLi. I have a friend wanting to upgrade to a new card, so I was thinking about selling him mine and getting 2 of these instead. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130687

The reason I am thinking of switching is the RAM. I'm tempted to go triple screen in the near future and was wondering if making the switch to the EVGA would be a benefit when using triple screens, or even when using a single 1080p screen? What benefits would i see from teh larger card?

Would this card be worth getting or should I just keep my MSI and get a second one?

On 1080p? You wouldn't ever use more than 1250MB.

On 5760x1080? You'd best wait for the next generation.

Unless you are going with nvidia surround, aka 3 monitor gaming at 5760 x 1080 resolution or higher the extra vRAM will be completely a waste of money as you'll never use most of it to warrant the extra cost.

Wait for next gen would be my recommendation

That's not necessarily true.

I've seen as much as 1,490MB usage in Crysis 2 (maxed) I believe.

Unless that has something to do with memory scaling and management.

Crysis Warhead maxed will use about 1.5GB. Eve online with multiple clients about 1.5GB, Crysis 2 about 1.5GB Maxed.
Recently picked up a HD6950, I was surprised at the amount of RAM being used. Certainly nice to have 2GB on the card.
Battlefield I hear will use similar amount maxed.

I think you really need to go all in one direction or the other. Either get triple screens and do it well, which right now would mean SLI 3GB 580s (most likely the Lightning X) or to decide to remain on one screen and do that well, which would mean either staying with just the one 570 or buying another one that is cheap.

Those 2.5Gb EVGA cards are a really bad buy IMO, they have a cooler that isn't really up to the task of cooling a 570 and they have only a 4+2 VRM design which isn't the best for overclocking them to the max that you would want if you truly needed all that VRAM, i.e. were at triple screen.

I think I kinda agree with Track that you'd be best served waiting with what you have spending your money on the next generation if you want to be cost effective with your triple screen goal. If you just want triple screen done well no matter the cost then don't cut corners and get a couple of Lightning Xs.

A small correction though Track I have seen more than 1450Mb of my VRAM used in the BF3 beta at 1080p but I'm sure a 570 could max that out as well, and you are right that 1.25Gb is a good amount of VRAM for 1080P.

I can't quite agree with you on the SLI 3 GB 580s, for at least price per performance. I originally was using them drivin 6000 x 1080 and compared them against the Xfire 2GB 6970s and for the most part I could not find most games using up the entire 2GB per card.

One thing I can say though is nVidia does have a lot better driver and game support for their 3 monitor gaming then AMD. I'll more then likely go back to nVidia when the next gen comes out, even though my 6970s were a good for their value, they lack support in some games that nVidia has (Witcher 2 for instance)

This. The card will preload anything it thinks has the remote possibility of being used up to the card's vram limit. Is that 1.49 actively all being used? Nope.

Yeah games are starting to use up my 1.25gb at 1080p, but unlike 1gb cards I haven't seen any ill-effects from it thus far.

Crysis 2 and BF3 Beta have, Shogun 2 has as well, but none have gone so far over my limit that stuttering occurred.

1.25gb is getting pretty close to it's limit, but we're not quite there yet.
