580 questions. Update Pulled the Trigger.

Thread Starter
Hey OCN was looking in to getting some 580's to replace my 5970. I was looking at both the 1.5mb and 3mb cards. Just had a few questions that I had a hard time finding on the forums.

How do the 1.5mb card overclock compaired to the 3mb cards?

only reason I am thinking about the 3mb is for BF3 and my huge monitor resolution.

what do you think of these.

3mb MSI

1.5mb EVGA

Thanks guys!

Unless you are playing across three monitors in nVidia surround you won't really get much of a benefit using the 3GB versions of the cards.

Even with that Crysis 2 at 6000 x 1080 for me on everything high the 3GB cards were using only about 2-2.25GB of vRam and I've been reading that Crysis 2 loads up stuff even if it doesn't need it.

If you have a screen over or combined res 1080p then go for the 3GB, otherwise save your money

The 1.5GB 580s have shown to overclock a bit better than their 3GB brothers. I'm not sure if it has to do with more memory being harder on the card itself or just a bad run of GPUs.

Out of those two choices I think you'd be better off with the MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme (3GB) because of your 2560 x 1600p monitor. 1.5GB will choke with high settings.

He is running at 2560x1600 guys, he even mentioned his huge resolution in the OP.

I would go with the 3Gb MSI Lightning X at your resolution. It's not much more than a 1.5Gb 580 relatively speaking but you will be glad you have it even in the short term, but especially in future games or if you decide to go SLI. Oh and the Lightning X is on sale for literally like the first time ever, it's only $20 off but it also includes two games, and I don't think you will be seeing it for even this low anytime soon. I would buy now if I were in the market.

Nice choice on the monitor
I personally don't think 1.5GB of VRAM is enough, what's for sure is that it's not future proof at all at 2560*1600. Having the same monitor and therefore the same resolution, I made sure I was getting 3GB cards, in a few games I go over 2GB of usage.
Memory overclocking will be slightly lower because we're pushing bigger memory chips and the latency will be slightly higher, but really though nothing you would ever notice. What's for sure is that you'll be soon hitting the memory wall with 1.5GB of VRAM.
I've noticed a lot of people advise against going for the 3GB cards, I think they're trying to make themselves feel better about what they already have when deep inside they know that 1.5GB is easily attainable especially at 1600p.

Actually 2560x1600 uses over 3 gigs on BF3, so unless ur running a 30 inch monitor or multiple monitors then u wont need a 3 gig. and even with 2 cards it still sorta sluggish in BF3, im getting a 3rd card for this issue.

however I moved from a 5970 and got 2 cards, 1.5 and one 3 gig and they more or less overclock the same.

Is your CPU stock? if you are OCed around 3.8-4.2 you will be fine, even at stock you shouldn't have a issue... the 930 is a great chip.

btw I run a zr30w and I have one 580 1.5GB stock clocked and run BF3 without issues.... it isn't maxed out but if you do a little research and look at the difference between the 3GB and 1.5GB cards you will see that the 3GB cards are a waste.

better off just getting 2 1.5 and saving the cash... but that is up to you and your wallet

At 4GHz you should be alright.

The more GHz the better!

A first gen i7 shouldn't bottleneck if it's clocked high enough.
