What should I do?

Thread Starter
Hi all, I am just trying to figure out what I should upgrade on my PC for games (admin please don't close thread because this is just not about BF3 and ppl ignore my posts in that thread). Money is tight, but I want to upgrade so I can play most games out there maxed or close to it with no slow downs. Even tho, I play every game atm with my system on max, I can tell there are slow downs and freeze ups sometimes, but I'm not sure if its gfx related or CPU.

at the moment my my current PC has:

MSI 650i SLI
Q6600 @ 2.7ghz
4 GIGS DDR2 800
Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1 GIGDDR5 overclocked to 870/1740/2130 @ 1.25v
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

BF3:
I run the game all high with 4xaa, 16xaf, HBAO, @1280x1024 (got a small monitor) and I get anywhere from 30-80fps.

But I kinda want to get more than that, like 50-70 FPS constant. I mean, it's playable and it looks really nice, but I get slow downs sometimes especially in the streets. Now, since money is tight for me atm, I can afford one upgrade. DO you think I should keep the Q6600 and get a card like a 560/570? OR get a new CPU say like an i5? I'm not really sure what's slowing me down, my CPU or GFX card. thanks!

Try using vertical sync to stabilize the fps of the game to somewhere nearer to your monitor's. I think it's the changes from 30-80 that makes you feel like there's a lot of lag in the game. I tried the game myself and I don't experience that much of a lag.

I would say a cpu upgrade or overclock is deff necessary.

Get a girlfriend.

Sorry, I didn't read the post at all.

Ok edit time: Im not so sure a cpu will help you in this engine, theres evidence that going from AMD phenom II to the new SB nets 1FPS difference. If you tone down your settings it will play better.

THEN you can use the money you save to take a girl on a date.

Your resolution is low, so you would go with a new cpu, but you'd need a new motherboard and memory for a newer quad. I wouldn't do anything until that particular game comes out and is benchmarked and tested on the hardware sites. If you pre-ordered, just stick with what you have for now especially since your slowdowns could be server related.
