one watt of power, said Andreas Olofsson, Adapteva's CEO. A watt may be high for smartphones, but performance and power consumed by the cores can be scaled down to accelerate tasks such as hand-gesture recognition and face recognition, Olofsson said.

The chip cannot host a full OS, and is intended to be a co-processor to take processing load off CPUs. Epiphany IV has a mesh design for faster data exchange, and the parallel cores have been arranged in a square with multiple points of contact to receive and transfer data. Cores can be easily added to scale performance, and the multiple communication points help resolve bandwidth issues.

"We're not trying to take on Intel or ARM, we're trying to sit next to it," Olofsson said.

Honestly just sounds like what GPU's are starting to be coded for. Hardware acceleration in your browsers, Flash, physics, 3D....really you can code a GPU to do a lot of things as long as it is supported withing the software.

Their really not doing anything different and they are a start up company compared to a lot of the big dogs already out there; so to get developers to start coding for their chips....lets just say I won't hold my breath.

Its a good idea but will it ever work? I mean as the CPUs get stronger this will be render useless. Didn't old PC CPUs have a Co-CPU for instruction sets and then they implemented them in one.

I don't know what classifies something as a 'core' but by the sounds of what this chip does these look more like the FPUs commonly found on GPUs, and the super lower power consumption is similar to that of a fpga device.

It's nothing groundbreaking, really. The system will still need an 'executive' to make the decisions (as a CPU does in a modern PC) and use this stream processing device in disguise as the workhorse.

yea i had to do a google search on gigaflops... my CPU at stock has 83.30 gigaflops! 2500K has 48. 1100T 57.39, and 955 has 37... hmmm im saving this page...
