Suggestions for a portable, semi-powerful Laptop?

Thread Starter
I've been looking for a new laptop to use for school, but I have no idea what's the best way to go. I was thinking about buying a 13" MacBook Pro, but I feel like I could get something comparable without the Apple attached to it for cheaper.

Here's basically what I'm looking for:

What is your maximum budget?
Around $1,000.

I can get a used 13" Mac for $1,100 + tax at work, and that's my back-up option.

What country are you in?
Canada.

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Programming, taking notes, some gaming. I have a brand new desktop I built a few months ago for gaming, so this laptop would be mainly used for school work, and occasionally gaming at a friend's house (so I don't have to haul my desktop over).

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Not really. As long as it works well I'm happy.

What screen size do you require?
Probably 13". I want something portable, but not a netbook.

What screen resolution do you require?
No preference. As long it looks good on the laptop it's fine. I don't need anything crazy.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Used/refurbished is fine too. I'd prefer new since I'm most likely purchasing this online, but if a good deal pops up for a used model, I'd go for it.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
Six to eight hours would be great. I'll be carrying my power bar just in case, but some of my classrooms don't have any sockets.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Probably LoL, StarCraft2, Diablo 3 and SW:TOR when it comes out... Maybe WoW if I ever go down that road again. As long it runs smooth at medium settings I'm ok. Since this isn't going to be my main gaming platform, I'd like for it to be decent for when I do game.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows 7 or whatever wild animal Mac is on now.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Not really. I'd prefer something darker, but not deal-breaker.

How much hard drive space do you need?
I think 320-500 gigs should be enough.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
WebCam would be nice since I don't own one otherwise, and it could come in handy sometimes. Blu-ray is nice, but not a necessity.

Is there anything else we need to know?
Size wise, I'd like something fairly slim. My campus is fairly large, and I have classes all over the place, so carrying around something heavy would be a massive pain.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything important in describing what I'm looking for.

Seems like it might fit the bill ?

I'd check the other Asus ones on there as well.

Dell offers a slim series for both the XPS and Inspiron. But, Dell is usually very overpriced.

HP has a nicely priced slim laptop. you can upgrade the CPU and GPU and still be under $1000.
dm4x.

I personally love to customize my laptops even though it is a little more expensive that way.

This one look nice and is cheaper than what you look for.

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/webca/LenovoPortal/en_CA/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=4B0468CDBDEF8E9A9EEA614E07A221EF&action=init

It is maybe more powerfull that what you need... and if you use the gpu alot, it may reduce the battery last time.

Lee, just concider these insane deal (imo, the are REALLY insane)

Edit : Better with a link XD

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm gonna look into these some more this weekend!

I'm thinking about waiting for the Samsung Series 7 Chronos as well. After I made this thread I started looking around to see what other people were looking at, and the Chronos really stood out to me. It's not coming to Canada till mid November, but it might be worth the wait.
