[Blogs.ea] Battlefield 3 Open Beta Update #2

I want to give you an overview of how the Open Beta is helping us shape a fantastic final game, what we are implementing based on your feedback, and how the Open Beta will help us deliver a robust gaming environment from day one.

The Open Beta is a true Beta
The Battlefield 3 Open Beta is based on software that is more than one month old. We need to test the new back end dedicated server structure we’ve built. Not only have we built a new game engine, but an entirely new back end system so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of dedicated servers on all platforms.

Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.

We had to do this in order to have as many people testing as possible, in order to ensure a top quality experience when the game is released. However, we’re confident in the Battlefield formula and confident that our fans will support us in order to make Battlefield 3 better.

Dedicated servers require dedicated testing
The biggest reason for running the Open Beta is to stress test our servers and back end. Already, we are seeing 6 times the number of simultaneous players in the Battlefield 3 Open Beta compared to the Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2! The fact that Battlefield 3 is clearly our biggest game launch ever by a magnitude of 6 makes it doubly important to test everything.
Source

I just thought that some people might need a reminder before going: "omigod this game is going gold in a week, they can't fix any bugs!" Old code is old and this proves it.

Hopefully this instantly reduces all the complaining by about 90%. Didn't matter how many DICE employees twittered that the beta wasn't representative of the final product, people just kept going nuts. In other news, this is great. I've beta tested quite a few games in my time, and this is by far one of the most responsive betas I have seen. Good stuff, and I am beyond stoked for this game.

Thank God for this post.

It's about time, so all the haters can shut up. No, seriously...all the drama on OCN over like 9,000 different threads about BF3 not going to look or play any differently from the beta, etc., and just general assumptions by OCN members that were pretending they were DICE devs that knew exactly what was going on between the beta and final releases was getting a little ridiculous.

This is the big takeway from that whole post:

The final game will look, play and sound better than the Open Beta. You have helped making sure of that.

Karl Magnus Troedsson

General Manager, DICE
Well, except for the part about people helping, because more than 90% of the community probably just ended up crying and complaining rather than actually providing any honest and constructive feedback on the Beta in a formalized fashion.

Now, we wait...which is what we should all have just been doing in the first place instead of resorting to arguments on OCN about what was or wasn't going to happen between the Beta and the final release...

Hmm sounds like you are crying to me?

see? this proves all the NOOBS wrong! this game will be astronomically different with 100x better graphics in the release 3 weeks from now than this old BETA (note BETA, not DEMO). Ask any professional game programmer and he will tell you that the entire game can change completely (including graphics) in the 2 months since the BETA code.

god, these noobs are soooo unappreciative of their chance to try out a videogame. don't they know the final release will be NOTHING like the beta?
