Of course it's marketing. They bought out a company that made voice recognition apps and it's running on a mobile phone's processor...it's not magic.

I've heard it actually is using parts of the GPU although at this point I have no way to know for sure:

Unless they can come up with a clever work-around, no, it won't. The fourier comb amd Markov filter -- essential to turnning a stream of words into a tiny handful of contextually-cogent bytes -- runs in one of the two PowerVR GPU cores that is in the newer A5. The 4S has extra links between the GPU output and the baseband chip so that the Siri application has its own dedicated connection to the cloud processing farms (currently, just the one in Philadelphia), piggybacked on the primary stream to and from the cell.

/hipster mode on
I used Siri before it was cool.
/hipster mode off

Seriously though, it was pretty good even as a free app in it's early days. It was MUCH better then the build in voice commands that iOS had.

Where this will really shine is texting, namely while driving. I can break the law without breaking the law!

What I mean is that with only so much access to computing power, AI can only do so much.

I won't make guesses either way though, say what you will about them (and lord knows I have) Apple does have a strong track record of delivering on the things they put effort into.

Seeing as how the only other thing this phone has going for it is a slightly better camera, maybe they spent all their time on Siri and it really is amazing.

A better question perhaps; if the A5 is such a powerful chip, where's Flash browsing at?

That could be something to at least get a bit excited about.

I don't understand why everyone is so skeptical. There has been a Siri app out for years. It is great definitely one of the best smart phone apps. The voice control is amazing. You do not need to try to pronounce everything like a robot as you must do with many other voice controlled things. One could speak like a cowboy and understand every word. You can say, "I want a donuts" and it will search the area for nearby bakerys, show reviews, give you directions, and give you the bakery's numbers. You can say, "Whats the progress of delta flight from Minneapolis to Chicago?" and it will show you where the plane is in the air and the status of arrival. You can say, "find me a prostitute" and it will make a joke about you being bad and give you info on local escorts in the area. You can say, "I really need to poop" and it will find the closest public bathrooms. You can ask it the meaning of life and it will say 42. You can ask it any fact and it will give you the answer from wolfram alpha or if not available just google it for you. The new Assistant will do all of this and also tack on the ability to do phone functions such as read off texts and rearrange things in your calendar. The one thing I don't get is why it needs an a5. The siri app works great on my first gen and the new and old apps aren't to different.

The commercial alone shows it smoking Google's ass when it comes to voice recognition. Google VR is pretty craptacular. And this is coming from someone who loves his Nexus One to death. Voice Recognition from Google is OKAY, but not good, and definitely not great. Not in the slightest.

Oh, I forgot, I'm on OCN, where anything Apple can't be better than anything else out there.

True, but if the AI is leveraging the GPUs (or parts of them) as well as the CPUs and Apple's servers at the same time, it could be a lot more than we think. I'm not saying it is leveraging the GPUs or not, I don't know yet but we'll see.

What do you mean the only thing going for it is a slightly better camera? I don't think there's even one thing in the 4S that isn't leaps above the 4.

this is not an AI, if it were an AI we would all be either dead or living in caves as terminators tear across the wasteland. Its just another program, no more an intelligence then minesweeper is.

Not trolling you, but, what about the same body design, same screen size, possibly RAM being 512MB. There's at least 2.
