(Pretend) Overclock Your Mac!

We all love are macs... but sometimes we feel jealous if we fall behind in hardware, or are tired of pc users bragging about their new bad-ass processors. Here is a guide to fit all of our (pretend) overclocking needs!

First things first, this does not actually modify any hardware/bios settings, we are just simply modifying strings. AND YOU NEED ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES

If a lot of people request it, I can add pictures to each step

Next if you happen to mess anything up and you break your computer IT IS YOUR FAULT, NOT MINE... Enjoy

Here is a link to a youtube video I made that I recommend everyone watch before reading this guide, to see how thing work.

Okay, now down to business:

Step 1) Open a new finder menu and navigate to System/Library/CoreServices/Resources

Step 2) Find English.lproj and control click, (right click) get info

Step 3) Expand sharing and permissions, then click the lock and type in your password

Step 4) Click the plus and add YOUR account, then change the permissions on YOUR account to read/write, then re-lock and close the window

Step 5) Create a new folder on your desktop and title it "Backup" then COPY AppleSystemInfo.strings into it (this is used to restore the strings at a later time

Step 6) Control click AppleSystemInfo.strings (in the finder window NOT the backup you just made) then go to get info and repeat steps 3 and 4

Optional Step 6.5) If you do not feel comfortable modifying the strings yourself, replace your AppleSystemInfo with this one. I am not sure if you will need to reset you permissions or not, but I am willing to help anyone work around an issue here

http://www.mediafire.com/?xgw0b1a3aavbr1a

Step 7) Open AppleSystemInfo.strings with a text editor like, text edit.
*If your processor is currently slower than 1 GHz scroll down to where it says = "%d MHz"; and replace what is inside the parenthesis to whatever you want your pretend overclock to be

**If your processor is currently faster than 1 GHz scroll down to where it says = "%d GHz"; and replace what is inside the parenthesis to whatever you want your pretend overclock to be

***If you have less than 1 gig of Ram scroll down to where it says = "%d MB"; and replace what is inside the parenthesis to whatever you want your pretend ram to be

****If you have more than 1 gig of Ram scroll down to where it says = "%d GB"; and replace what is inside the parenthesis to whatever you want your pretend ram to be

Step 8) Save the file then navigate to the apple menu, then about this mac... and Behold! your are the envy of all your friends!

This guide may still be a work in progress. But I hope you find it very useful

Kind of useless when does not actually increase your clock speed.
Useful (in other methods) for trying to install Leopard on something less than 866 Mhz, though.

It's not intended (and doesn't) actually boost anything, its just to gain bragging rights.
