Worth it to upgrade from GTX 470 right now?

Thread Starter
So the GTX 500 series is the new hotness and all, and it's fair to say that I've been dissappointed with my GTX 470.

Mine idles at about 52 Celsius with Fans at 70%, ramps up to about 64-72 Celsius under full load, fans still at 70% (Which is frakken loud I must say.)

That and some graphical glitches (which haven't happened since someone helped me up my voltage, but still.)

I'm wondering if any of the 500 series offer better performance with lower temps.

The only solid upgrade is a GTX 580, its not worth the 500$ price tag over your 470. If temps bother yout THAT much then make sure your voltage isnt TOO high, and buy an aftermarket cooler or a water cooler then get a second 470, it beats out every single card (single) on the market.

I have a CTX480 and it gets up to 80 Celsius under load and yes it's loud. Still a great card and play just about everything maxed out (not Battlefield3) Been looking at the 580's, but the 570's are great cards, much cooler and quiter.

it will definately help with temperature if you go with a card that has an aftermarket cooler on it like MSI etc. I have no problems gaming on my GTX 470( so I plan to not upgrade anytime soon). But if you insist on upgrading heres my take on the gtx 500 cards compared to your gtx 470.

GTX 560 ti = GTX 470
GTX 570 = GTX 480
GTX 580 > GTX 570

Thanks for the input chaps I think I might try and slice the EVGA one open (It's not under warranty), and put an aftermarket cooler on it.

I would keep he 470 and upgrade the cooler. Not worth it to change cards.

The only worthwhile upgrade would be to a 580, but I would save the money and wait a little bit for Kepler.

My 470 maxes out BF3 in beta at 1080p just fine.

Absolutely not worth it unless you buy a 580/590 and/or have disposable income.

With regards to aftermarket coolers - I've never modded a Graphics card before - would anyone be kind enough to point me in the direction of guides to do so, and/or good coolers for an EVGA GTX 470?

Many thanks again!
