Worth it to upgrade from GTX 470 right now? - Page 2

I have mine on water, but something like this one is good.
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/acxtpl.html

If you get an aftermarket cooler, it will have directions. The big deal with the 470 is cooling the vrms. The EVGA stock coolers and green thermal pads are crap. On water, full load<idol on air.

Unfortunately I'll be airbound for quite some time.

The Silverstone FT02 really doesn't have the room for a loop (particularly the rad), I don't trust myself to put together a good loop, I distrust Water in computers (mostly my own thing, even though I'm using a Corsair H70), and Air is easier to set up.

EDIT: That cooler you recommended looks damn fine. 70 bucks is a small price to pay for a bit quieter VGA, and bit cooler to boot.

Read the following thread for a crash introduction to the 2 challenges facing you ahead when you move from the traditional cooling design (ie front-centrifugal-fan-intake-and-rear-exhaust) to aftermarket coolers.

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/1132...ght-now-2.html

Simply put, first you need to solve the problem of hot air recirculation. That is, eliminating or minimizing the hot air from the aftermarket cooler exhausted inside the case being recirculated (by the card itself or going through the H70) by defining an escape path for it. As you are a mechanical engineer, this ought not be a hard project.

Secondly, you will have to accept the reduced cooling capacity of the aftermarket cooler due to 'vertical' heatpipes orientation resulted from the FT02's vertical orientation of motherboard.

Many thanks again!
Accelero XTREME Plus

I have that on my 470 sitting in my other rig. Dropped its temps from 90C at full load down to ~50c. Its huge, takes three slots, but it will defiantly keep the card cool.

Eh, its not worth upgrading right now. The 470 still maxs out pretty everything.

Yup, thats what i was saying. Try this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186048

Its expensive, but much less than 500$

Or you could get this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835181016
for a little bit more, but a MUCH better cooler.

You will have to do a trick t get it to fit but it requires 8 - 10 zip ties and a pair of scissors and thats IT. Pme me if you want more info.

That and some graphical glitches (which haven't happened since someone helped me up my voltage, but still.)

I'm wondering if any of the 500 series offer better performance with lower temps.
Is the fan locked at 70% ? Did you try to manually control it with Afterburner ?

Anyway, 72 C is very cool for a reference 470. You could easily bump the voltage and overclock it. Temps should be safe even in the 90s.

Yeah my reference 470 idles at 70c or so and can peak at about 88c while playing a demanding game like Metro, BC2, or BF3. The fan can get quite loud too, but it doesn't bother me. My 8800Ultra was the same way. The quietest card I've ever owned was also the coolest running and that was my 9800GTX. It usually peaked at 75c, never more.

it's not worth ... cos GTX 470 still can max out games on 1080p res... just try to overclock your 470 to his limits... and see what happens

there is only 1 upgrade for you GTX 580... cos if you are going to 560ti or 570 you'll see same or 5-10% more performance and it's nothing... but if you move to 580 you'll see 35% more performance overall ... it's huge... but wait till 600 series release ^^ for now 470 isn't bad graphic card at all stay with it
