Graphics card upgrade 6950/6970/GTX570/GTX580

Okay, so I've got the itch, the upgrading itch ... and I seriously can't scratch it

(haha - 1090t, 990FXA-UD3, Kuhler 620, RAM, Xonar DG, HA-RX700's, SteelSeries Xai+4HD, Corsair Force3 SSD and Samsung 2tb F4 all purchased in the last month = my finances diminished and me hopeless)

But I'm also budget and value for money conscious. Gaming @ 1080p. Bulldozer FX8120/8150 coming before Skyrim.

Single GPU ONLY - I don't have the room on my MB for crossfire as my PCI slot is populated by my Xonar DG, blocking my 2nd PCIe x 16
*Once I'm under water, this may change, but that's musing for another day ...

I've been pretty much convinced of the 2gb MSI TwinFrozR III 6950 as it has been popping up on sale for ~£210 of late, and that overclocked to the max seem like the best bang for the buck.

I WILL be playing Skyrim with mods once they're out and thus VRAM is of concern. Oblivion modded already chews up VRAM currently.

Don't *really* care about unlocking the 6950's - overclocking is the name of my game, which seems to get great results from the 6950.

6950/6970's

GTX570/580's

Worthy of mentioning: I will be upgrading to the top of the line nVidia/AMD cards early 2012, regardless, and thus longevity really isn't of massive concern: just want decent performance in BF3 and maxed in Skyrim

I don't really want to spend on the GTX580, but have decided to consider it an option IF AND ONLY IF the value is really worth the extra price. From what I can work out though, a heavily overclocked 6950 will be nipping at the proverbial heels of a stock 580, and for only 2/3rds of the price. That's an easy decision to the 6950 in my eyes.

Well ladies and gentlemen; have at it ...

If you are going to upgrade get HD 6950. For one it will do what all 3 other cards can. Secondly its the slowest of all the but considering you will upgrade you save $ and the upgrade will be bigger.

I agree, get the 6950 since you plan to upgrade again soon. Its got plenty of juice to handle what you want at 1080p with no issues.

What if my next GPU upgrade wasn't until the start of Q2 2012?

Actually, when are the new series expected to come out anyway?

I can't think of any major game releases that I'll be looking forward to beyond Skyrim honestly. Oblivion is perhaps my equal favourite game of all time, and unless Half-Life 3 pops up nothing will "take me" like Skyrim will.

So yeah ... I bought an MSI Twin FrozR III 2gb 6950 today. The price was right, and I couldn't help my addiction. This has to stop sometime soon ... haha, yeah right
