Q9550 OC Help - Page 2

I reset my BIOS and I'm idling at 44C w/ Thermaltake Golden Orb II. I have had the same thermal paste tube for about 6 years could that be why? Should I get a new tube?

I'm not sure if thermal paste goes bad or not but after 6 years I would get another tube just in case since it is pretty cheap.

Right now with everything set to default I'm running Rift at 50C. I'll definitely head out to the store and get a new HSF and thermal paste and let you know how that goes thanks for all your help.

No problem, hopefully the new cooler will drop your temps a good bit.

So I feel like a noob I left my Voltage on auto and that's why my temps were so high at 3.4Ghz, right now I set it to manual and 1.18v.

Idle I'm at 46-50c / gaming at 56C does that sound about right? Whats the max temp that I shouldn't go over?

I bought the Cool Master 212 Evo haven't installed yet and I am wondering If I should replace my Thermaltake Golden Orb II at these temps?

Those temps look a lot better. As far as max temps, you will get a few different opinions. Some will say 75C, others 85C. I never let mine go over 85C and the only time it gets there is while stress testing with IBT. For normal use though, I never go over 75C for 24/7.

Your temps look fine though. The CM 212 will probably lower them a bit but if you are not planning to OC any further and are comfortable with those temps you could always return it and stick with the Golden Orb.

I would like to push it further just a little confused on the process. Do I increase FSB first, then adjust the voltage if its not stable?

arctic silver all the way sir. i loved y 9550 but i got a steal on the current rig so i had to go the 9550 holds good value with the right board you can get 4.2 stable unti 1.4 with air cooling but your gona cough up about 50 bucks for a cooler. ram isn't much of an issue util you got some cheapie crap. IMO when your overclockig you stop when the voltage jump because so much for so little then back it off about 15 or so percent. some will agrue that you can and yes you can degrade a cpu but within its life time you and anyone you pass it on to wont die for the next many years. without stupid voltages being pushed at it thats is.

Yeah, increase the FSB in 5-10 MHz increments, stress test, if it passes repeat, if not then adjust the voltages. Here is a nice guide that I used, it's a lot of reading but well worth it to fully understand what you're getting in to.
